Untitled V by Ming Chiao Kuo, Enamel Painting on Copper, 1984, Framed

US$7,000

About

Untitled V Ming Chiao Kuo Enamel painting on copper 1984 Framed Art size: 10" x 8" Kuo Ming Chiao 1917-2014 Kuo Ming Chiao (???) studied under Xu Beihong (???) and Jian Zhaohe (???) at (National) Beiping Art School, and continued the lineage of Xu’s realistic approach in figure painting. In many ways, his 1956 epic painting is an intriguing echo of Jian Zhaohe’s well known Refugees (???) of 1943, with which Kuo Ming Chiao personally assisted Jiang in the entire process of its making. What I find truly interesting is the disparity of the historical circumstance of Kuo’s 1956 painting under the Nationalist ruling and that of Jiang’s during the Japanese occupation of Beijing in the early 1940’s. Considering how realism became a de facto style promoted by the communist regime from the 50’s in the mainland; Kuo’s creation, in contrast, was all but his own passion and self fulfillment and thus a compelling reflection of an artist’s personal journey and the trajectory of Chinese modern art history.
