Art Nouveau Dome Rings

ART NOUVEAU STYLE

Art Nouveau — generally considered to have begun in the late 1800s and ended with the start of World War I — was a movement in the decorative arts that drew inspiration from natural forms, such as trees, flowers and, of course, the human figure. The three main themes present in Art Nouveau jewelry and watches were flora, fauna and women.

Art Nouveau, which reached its pinnacle in the year 1900, spawned from artists who rejected the historicism of their predecessors to create an entirely new visual vocabulary. As compared to Art Deco jewelry’s geometric patterns and sharp lines, the extravagant style of antique Art Nouveau jewelry is characterized by curvilinear forms and whiplash lines, vibrant materials and dramatic imagery.

The first art and design movement of the 20th century, Art Nouveau was also a reaction against the Industrial Revolution, and took its inspiration from the theories of the Symbolists, the art of the Pre-Raphaelites, the ideas of John Ruskin and his follower William Morris and, most importantly Japanese crafts. (The country was a fertile ground for inspiration after it was opened to the West in 1854.) The Art Nouveau style touched all manners of the arts, including the most exultant jewelry.

Nature was a favorite muse for artists going back to the 18th and 19th centuries, but in the hands of 20th-century artists, it was depicted in new ways. For example, a withering flower was considered just as beautiful as one in full bloom. Winged creatures, such as insects and birds, were also a popular subject. Dragonflies and butterflies were particular favorites because they morphed so dramatically in different life stages.

This was also a reference to women, whose role in society was evolving. It was not uncommon to see a piece of jewelry that would at once reference a woman as a winged creature (think René Lalique’s famous Dragonfly brooch, circa 1897–98, at the Gulbenkian Collection in Lisbon). However, just as women’s roles were ambiguous, so was their image, as the femmes nouvelle were simultaneously eroticized and romanticized.

In addition to Lalique, vital figures in Art Nouveau jewelry included Louis Comfort Tiffany in the United States, Vladimir Soloviev, who designed jewelry for Peter Carl Fabergé in Russia, Fuset Grau of Spain, Karl Rothmuller of Germany and Philippe Wolfers of Belgium.

Art Nouveau jewelers used every “canvas” imaginable, looking beyond brooches and necklaces to belt buckles, fans, tiaras, dog collars (a type of choker necklace), pocket watches, corsages and hair combs. Multicolored gems and enamel could complete this vision better than diamonds. Jewelers also favored pearls, particularly baroque pearls, for their large size and irregular shape. However, opal was the most popular stone — its iridescence harmonized perfectly with the enamel, and it could be carved into any shape. Art Nouveau jewelry was primarily set in yellow gold.

Ring Rose Gold Malachite Russia ca. 1915
Located in Berlin, DE
Beautifully carved malachite and rose gold dome ring made in Russia, ca. 1915. The rich color in shades of green is enhanced by the expertise of the carver. A statement piece for the independant lady - colorful but elegant at the same time. The luxuriant, swirling patterns of malachite have striking light and dark green marbling that is unmistakable. The startling beauty of this stone has come to represent sensuality and beauty. With its concentric, eye-like rings of green that mimic the eye of a peacock feather, this stone has captured the imagination of many cultures for ages. The first culture to use malachite for adornment was ancient Egypt around 4,000 BC. The Egyptians used malachite as an ornamental stone in jewelry and art. The stone was imported from King Solomon's infamous copper mines on the Red Sea. Archeologists have found Egyptian tomb paintings using malachite gemstones that had been ground into paint that colored the walls. It was also ground into a fine dust and mixed with galena, a thick paste used to make kohl, on slate palettes to be painted onto eyelids as a cosmetic and talisman against evil. Vivid green malachite kohl is believed to be Cleopatra's favorite cosmetic, and she was buried with a large vase of it for use in her afterlife. Malachite also played an important role in European paintings during the Renaissance period of the 15th and 16th centuries as a pigment for paints and dyes. It is believed that many of the green colors found in Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel painting were painted with malachite-based oil paints. It was the Russian Romanov...

Ring Enamel Round Opalescent Purple 18k White Gold 5 Diamonds 0.03 ct
Located in Pforzheim, DE
Victor Mayer Merian Collection Opalescent Purple Enamel Ring in 18k White Gold with Diamonds About the Creator VICTOR MAYER is a fine jewelry house known for its sophisticated craftsmanship. Since 1989, the company has been closely associated with the Fabergé name as a workmaster. The company was founded by Victor Mayer in Pforzheim, Germany in 1890 and is managed by his great-grandson Dr. Marcus Oliver Mohr. The inimitably luminous colors are literally created "in the fire": layer after layer of enamel is carefully fired at 800 degrees. During guilloching, the finest wave patterns are engraved on gold, creating a unique depth effect. The rare techniques have been passed down from generation to generation since the company's founding. With a feeling for style, timeless classics are created. The company is working with gold, gemstones as well as diamonds. About the Merian collection: Named afert Maria Sibylla Merian (* April 2, 1647 in Frankfurt am Main, † January 13, 1717 in Amsterdam), who was a natural scientist and artist. With an extraordinarily self-confident spirit, she defied the conventions of the time and was one of the first female scientists of modernity. As a natural scientist she used her talent as a graphic artist and her special style inspired us to create this collection, in which we translated her own style into finely structured drawings in enamel. Ring Merian, 18k WG, vitreous enamel, 5 diamonds total 0.03 ct, G VS Reference: V1724/OH/00/00/101 Material: 18k white gold Vitreous enamel: opal raspberry Diamonds: 5 diamonds, together 0.03 ct Edition limited to: 300 pieces We offer this piece of jewellery in yellow, white and rose gold as well as a wide range of other enamel colours. Each of our jewellery pieces has an individual limit number engraved inside or on the back, which may differ from the one shown in the photos. The jewellery is available in stock and can be delivered at short notice. Authentic vitreous enamel: The glass melting process that gives the jewellery its unmistakeable, sophisticated sheen is conducted today using the same complex process that was employed in the past: up to five layers of pigment are applied with equal measures of skill and patience, before being fired and then polished by hand. The end result is achieved as the consequence of sensitive interplay between time and temperature. The slightest inclusion in the enamel bears...
