About the Item
This elegant ceramic vessel is a Ming-dynasty (1368-1644) bottle originally used for storing oil or sauces. Dated to the 15th/16th century, the bottle has a gracefully curved form known as yuhuchunping, or pear-shaped vase, and is potted with a rounded body, a dramatically tapered neck and a wide, upturned rim. The vase is decorated in the blue-and-white manner with dark blue cobalt underglaze, loosely painted at the shoulder with horizontal stripes and sweeping spirals, a motif known as "horse eye" pattern. A thin glaze of celadon tone finishes the design, flecked with firing imperfections and softly worn with time.
