About the Item
This elegant ceramic vessel is a Ming-dynasty (1368-1644) bottle originally used for storing oil or sauces. Dated to the 15th/16th century, the bottle has a gracefully curved form known as yuhuchunping, or pear-shaped vase, and is potted with a rounded body, a dramatically tapered neck and a wide, upturned rim.
The vase is decorated in the blue-and-white manner with dark blue cobalt underglaze, loosely painted with abstract florals and sweeping brushstrokes. Exposure to fire in the kiln has caused tonal variance in the glaze and time has imparted a lovely matte texture.
