About the Item

An exquisite set of Mingei Mashiko ware pottery Yunomi tea cups by master potter and Japanese National Human Cultural Treasure Shoji Hamada - a fine example of his hand applied oxide iron brush bamboo pattern motif with hakeme (Hakeme is a Japanese pottery decorating technique that uses a brush to apply a contrasting colored slip to the surface of a pot). The original Hamada signed and sealed wood tomobako box is included. Rare to find such a beautiful pair in such impeccable condition with its original signed box. Two beautiful works (one cup is slightly larger than the other as they were likely made as a "his" and "her" husband and wife meoto (夫婦) set) that would sure to shine in any Japanese pottery/ Asian art or ceramics collection or make for an eye-catching stand-alone accent piece in about any setting. Shoji Hamada was designated a Living National Treasure in Japan in 1955. In 1968 he received Japan's highest artistic award the Order of Culture. His work can be found in collections and museums worldwide including Tokyo’s Japan Folk Art Museum and The Tate Museum, London UK. Cup dimensions: first cup 3.5" high x 3.75" diameter, second cup 3.25" high x 3.5" diameter. Box dimensions: 4.75" high, 8.25" wide, 4.25" deep.
