Large Japanese Imari Fluted Charger, Edo/Meiji Period, Mid 19th Century, Japan
Located in Austin, TX
A large and impressive Japanese Imari porcelain fluted charger with scalloped rim, signed Kaji(chu?), Edo to Meiji Period, mid 19th century, Japan. The magnificent Japanese Imari charger measures 25" in diameter, and is decorated in the typical imari palette of underglaze blue with overglaze red, orange, blue, and green enamels with gilt highlights. The large charger also features fluted sides and a scalloped gilt rim. The design of the charger is centered on a central floral medallion with three large chrysanthemum blossoms and vegetal scrolls. Radiating out from the central medallion are various brocade patterned sections that roughly follow the shape of the fluting. Some larger sections feature images of cranes and minogame (turtles with long tails), both symbols of longevity, while other feature dragons and phoenix, symbols of authority and power. Four large reserves depict charming scenes of a scholar and his students within a bamboo grove having discourse and examining scrolls. The back of the charger decorated in underglaze blue with bold floral and vegetal scrolls. With a three character inscription in underglaze blue reading Kaji(chu?) Sei. The charger is fitted with an antique metal hanger...

Chinese set of four cloisonne plates depicting birds and blossom, circa 1930
Located in Central England, GB
This beautiful and vibrant set of four Chinese cloisonne wall or cabinet plates is most eyecatching. The design of exotic birds amongst branches with a flowering blossom is very well done with fine wires forming the design over a brass base which is then filled and fired with rich coloured glass enamels which are then ground and polished smooth to show the intricate design. Each plate is completely different but made to be a set of four which will display well as a wall hanging group or in a cabinet. Chinese, circa 1930 Height 2.5cm x width 18cm x depth 18cm We hope you enjoyed looking at this wonderful set of Chinese enamel cloisonne plates...

Chinese Cloisonné Charger or Large Plate fine detail, Mid-19th Century
Located in Lincoln, Lincolnshire
This is a very good Chinese Cloisonné Charger or Large Plate / Dish that we date to the mid-19th century of the Qing dynasty, Circa 1970. The Charger is circular on a low foot. The decoration shows a large central 12-lobed flower head with further flowers and leaves off it, leading to a three section pattern with three mythical phoenix, all in many different coloured enamels against a deep red ground. The outer rim has a detailed plantain leaf border decoration. The reverse has an unmarked green base with three roundel designs on the rim, all against a blue ground. Overall a very decorative 19th C Qing period Chinese Plate.

Sculpting as if drawing, and embracing the accidental moments that arise, led to many fascinating discoveries. Cloisonné ware is a craft in which a glassy glaze is applied to silver or copper and enclosed into the small sections separated by a wire. Japanese cloisonné enamel reached a technical peak, producing items more advanced than any that had existed before. Antique Chinese Porcelain Bencharong Bowl for the Thai Market, 18th century.
Located in Point Richmond, CA
Antique Chinese Porcelain Bowl for the Thai Market, 18th century. Bencharong enamel decoration with Buddhist imagery on a black background. This classic porcelain bowl form having a raised narrow foot rim and slightly everted mouth rim is richly decorated in bright polychrome enamels much favored by the nobility in eighteenth century Siam. This colorful style became known as “bencharong”, a term that derives from two Sanskrit words – panch (‘five’) and rong (‘colour’) and which relates to the number of colours used to decorate such porcelain. This bowl is decorated with typically Thai motifs. The sides are decorated with four Thepanom (Buddhist celestial beings) each wearing a broad necklace of petals and seated on a lotus within triangular cartouches that have a coral-red ground. Four Norasingh (mythical forest-dwelling semi-deity with a human head, torso, and arms but with the hind-quarters of a lion and the tail and hoofs of a deer) against black back grounds filled with flaming pink kranok motifs. This design is framed by two floral bands top and bottom and another double band on the interior mouth rim. The interior glazed in a soft turquoise green and remnants of a floral pattern roundel on center. Sets of porcelain such as this example were commissioned from the Jingdezhen kilns in China and exported to Thailand. 6-7/8 in. in diameter x 3-5/8 high (17.5 x 9cm) 16.7 oz. (475g.) Ayutthaya Period, 18th century. Provenance: German Private Collection. For similar examples see: William Warren & Luca Invernizzi Tettoni, Arts and Crafts of Thailand, Chronicle Books, San Francisco 1994, p.33. Large Japanese Imari Gilt Charger, the Six Immortal Poets, Meiji Period, Japan
Located in Austin, TX
A bold and unusual large 18.5" diameter Japanese gilt ground Imari porcelain charger featuring the Rokkasen, the Six Immortal Poets, Meiji Period, circa 1900, Japan. The impressive charger features a striking image of the Six Immortal Poets, known as the Rakkasen, seated in fenced pavilion within a lush garden setting and surrounded by numerous books and scrolls. Gnarled pine trees and and branches laden with plum blossoms tower overhead, while chrysanthemum and massive peonies bloom among rocky outcrops. The scene is unexpectedly and masterfully executed as if on a byobu, a traditional Japanese six panel folding screen. The screen is opened in a dramatic manner, slightly akimbo, almost jumping off the dish, reminiscent of the "screens within screens" genre that developed during the Edo Period. Despite the folds and changes in perspective, the painting remains harmonious and lyrical, with the fully gilt ground adding a sense of warmth and sumptuousness. The screen is bordered with a geometric bands in the shippo pattern. The shippo pattern features interlocking circles, and symbolizes the Seven Treasures. The shippo pattern on a larger scale serves at the background fo the rest of the charger. The backside of the charger decorated with two bands with underglaze blue designs. The reserve decorated with scattered stylized blossoms in iron red and gilt. The Rakkasen, known in English as the Six Immortal Poets, are a group of 9th century Heian Period waka poets whose works were included and praised by name in an anthology of poetry collected by the courtier, poet, and writer, Ki no Tsurayuki. Waka poems are a strict five line...
