This sculpture has carved features with full lips outlined with an incised line known as a “trace”, the “U” of the chin broad, long aquiline nose , protruding large and arched eye lids with the eyes narrowly open revealing the pupils, over arching brow continuing the line of the nose, short forehead, a thin raised outline as the hairline surrounding the face, 6 rows of round boss hair curls to the domed usnisa covered in 5 rows of hair curls, large ears with attenuated earlobes reaching to the break at the neck, flat top to the usnisa and a flat area to the back of the head. The facial surface gessoed lacquered and gold leafed, the rest of the head with Varied surface mottling and lacquer remnants mostly revealing the sandstone texture of the material. Mounted with a post and drilled interior hole to a large solid teak block as a contemporary stand.
Condition: A sculpture fragment from a large Buddhist Image, The head has been removed at the neck and the flat area at the top of the head would indicate that another mortared segment would have originally been attached possibly an undulant unalom finial, otherwise remarkably fine.
Measuring: 23-1/8 inches high overall, the sculpture is 15 inches high x 10 inches wide x 10-1/4 inches deep. The wood base is 8-1/8 inches high x 7-7/8 inches wide x 7-5/8 inches deep.

Provenance: From a Canadian auction selling the estate of a French gentleman who amassed a large collection of Gandhara, Buddhas and Khmer items throughout his life.

Shiva ( Siva, lit. the auspicious one) also known as Mahadeva ( lit. the greatest god) is one of the principal deities of Hinduism. He is the Supreme Being within Shaivism, one of the major traditions within contemporary Hinduism.
Shiva is known as "The Destroyer" within the Trimurti, the Hindu trinity that includes Brahma and Vishnu. In Shaivism tradition, Shiva is the Supreme being who creates, protects and transforms the universe. In the tradition of Hinduism called Shaktism, the Goddess, or Devi, is described as supreme, yet Shiva is revered along with Vishnu and Brahma. A goddess is stated to be the energy and creative power (Shakti) of each, with Parvati (Sati) the equal complementary partner of Shiva.
He is one of the five equivalent deities in Panchayatana puja of the Smarta tradition of Hinduism. According to the Shaivism sect, the highest form of Shiva is formless, limitless, transcendent and unchanging absolute Brahman,[16] and the primal Atman (soul, self) of the universe. There are many both benevolent and fearsome depictions of Shiva. In benevolent aspects, he is depicted as an omniscient Yogi who lives an ascetic life on Mount Kailash[1] as well as a householder with wife Parvati and his two children, Ganesha and Kartikeya. In his fierce aspects, he is often depicted slaying demons.

Madhya Pradesh, circa 11-12th century. Fragmented from large whole-body statue, these red sandstone heads exhibit very fine carving, typical of Northern Indian Art during the medieval time. Two males and one female, they represent heavenly deities Yakshas and Yakshini. Their facial features were detailed with large almond-shape eyes under thin arched eyebrows. The males have characteristic facial hairs including curvy moustaches and tightly combed beard, both finely carved, and the female wears large spoke loop earrings. They all don fantastical hairstyles with serpent-like spiral locks and some with elaborate knots on top and above the sideburns.

China Antique Qing Monumental Buddhist Stone Pagoda

China antique monumental Pagoda Shrine with carved Lohans, 115" high, red sandstone, eight sections, Qing dynasty (1644-1911)
This stone pagoda is a monumental work of art seldom seen in the west. Pagodas evolved from Indian stupas which were originally designed to hold the Buddha’s relics and textual paper sutras. This tiered tower composition became popular all over Asia and its architectural form differed from region to region. In China, its origins date to Buddhist missionaries who traveled the Silk Road. Early examples were built in temples but by the 13th century they were found outside the temple complex. Oldest examples had simple round or square bases and then later octagonal or more stylistic forms like the “censer” type of base on this pagoda. The 18 Arhats (lohans) portray Buddha’s messengers and each Lohan cylindrical tier is unique.
This tour de force could serve as the centerpiece in the finest indoor space, or private or public Chinese or Asian inspired garden or Buddhist art collection. Photographs taken in natural light.

Pair Antique 19th Century Indian Hindu Carved Stone Temple Guard Statues, 1850

A large & important pair of rare antique 19th century Indian Polychromed & hand carved stone Dvarpala (temple door guard) statues, circa 1850.
Each statue is hand carved as a male Hindu four armed temple guard, the guards holding a mace (Gada) and one hand on a dagger (Katar), another hand holding a lotus flower to represent spiritual enlightenment. Each guard stands crossed legged on a plinth decorated with an elephant, both statues retaining old and yet brightly colored polychromed decoration, the statues are approximately 3/4 lifesize. They are a true pair facing each other and would have flanked either side of the temple door entrance, they are large and very heavy, each figure weighs about 300lbs. It was purchased by a Private Dallas collector at Sotheby’s New York Auction on 24th September 2004. Sale Number 8008, Lot No. 28.
Sotheby’s operate a twice yearly auction of Southeast Asian Art & Antiquities in New York in the months of March and September.
The sculpture was described as: "Carved in relief with Vishnu in his boar incarnation stepping forward from the ocean, his left foot placed upon a lotus, two nagas beneath with their hands clasped in devotion. Vishnu’s primary right hand rests on his thigh in katihasta mudra while his remaining hands carry his attributes of mace, conch and discus. A diminutive figure of the earth Goddess, Bhudevi, whom Vishnu has rescued from the primeval waters, is balanced on his left elbow. The figure is bejeweled, wearing a broad, beaded waistband and necklaces and is placed within a niche between two pillars.
Measure: Height 27 in. (68.6 cm.),
circa 10th century.

A fine and rare Indian carved sandstone stele of a Jain family group, Sarnath style, early Indian Medieval period, 6th-7th century, Uttar Pradesh, India.
Carved from a single block of buff sandstone, the stele features a Jain family group comprised of a father, mother, and two children. The family group is portrayed upon a lotus pedestal under a tall palm tree. The mother and father both seated in a relaxed pose known as lalitasana, or royal ease pose, a jovial expression on their faces. The mother holds the daughter in her lap. The younger son scampers mischievously up the trunk of the palm tree, his head turned to look back at his parents.

China Rare Antique Double Dragon Stone, 19thc

Here's one of the most beautiful Chinese antiques we have ever found in our travels in China over the past three decades.
This is a one-of-a-kind antique sandstone lintel which when installed and displayed could be a handsome addition to your decor. It dates to the 18th century of the Qing dynasty.
It still retains remnants of its original poly chrome surfaces. The carving and detail is deep and very fine.
Depicted are a pair of writhing dragons competing for the fabled -wish granting jewel- and possibly water waves beneath- all auspicious signs.

13 inches high and 71 inches wide and 14 inches deep
