Rare Pair French Retour D'egypt Terracotta Lions Sculptures Statues Los Angeles
Located in West Hollywood, CA
Rare Pair French Retour D'egypt Terracotta Lions Sculptures Statues Los Angeles , Exceptional fine pair of Large French Retour D'egypt period terracotta lions, circa 1790-1810. The French Egyptian Revival style or the retour d'Egypte refers to style that makes use of the motifs and imagery of ancient Egypt. By the end of the 18th century enthusiasm for ancient Egypt generated by Napoleon's unsuccessful conquest of Egypt and, in Britain, to Admiral Nelson's defeat of Napoleon at the Battle of the Nile in 1798. Napoleon took a scientific expedition with him to Egypt and this was the first time a major study of ancient Egypt was done. Publication of the expedition's work, the description de l'Égypte, began in 1809 and came out in a series though 1826 influencing a new way of life in France thru architecture and decorative arts. However, works of art, decorative arts, furniture and, in the field of architecture and garden follies, funerary monuments in the Egyptian style had appeared in scattered European settings from the time of the Renaissance. The Egyptian Revival style came out in a few waves in France before Napoleon during the ancient Régime Egyptian motifs were mixed with the neoclassical-Louis XVI style in architecture, furniture and decorative arts. A big surge hit France around 1798 during Napoleons Egyptian expedition. This was the first major Egyptian Revival period as this was the first time in history that a major study on Egypt was done. French people became fascinated with the ancient Egyptian history, culture, architecture and furniture. Egyptian ornamentation like scarab beetles, sphinxes, winged lions and lotuses details were incorporated into Classical style furniture and decorative arts creating a style known as a hybrid neo-Egyptian. The next wave was during the height of the French Romantic period 1820s-1850s. The Egyptian Revival emerged as a result of the famous archaeological digs of the first half of the 19th century and was primarily used for Tomb memorials, temples, and cemeteries and some decorative arts. This style is distinguished by its adaptation of Egyptian forms and motifs, sphinxes guarding buildings including lotus blossoms, Pharaoh's heads, the winged disk symbol of the sun God, as well as the use of bold bright colors. At the end of the 19th century 1870s-1890s the Egyptian Revival styles were in vogue once more. At the Height of the Victorian period the Egyptian style was even more elaborate than before. Often incorporated with Neo-Greek & Renaissance Revival styles. Victorians were even more fascinated with these rare finds and incorporated their motifs into jewelry, furniture, glass and Art pottery. Heavily ornamented overstuffed furniture...

And you can see more objects to the style for sale. F. Barbedienne fonduer Ferdinand Barbedienne (6 August 1810 – 21 March 1892) was a French metalworker and manufacturer, who was well known as a bronze founder. The son of a small farmer from Calvados, he started his career as a dealer in wallpaper in Paris. In 1838 he went into partnership with Achille Collas (1795-1859), who had just invented a machine to create miniature bronze replicas of statues. Together they started a business selling miniatures of antique statues from museums all over Europe, thus democratising art and making it more accessible to households.[2] From 1843 they extended their scope by reproducing the work of living artists and also diversified by making enamelled household objects. With the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian war in 1870 the firm briefly had to switch to cannon founding owing to the shortage of metals but resumed business afterwards. Following Barbedienne's death in 1892, he was buried in the Père-Lachaise cemetery and the firm was carried on by his nephew Gustave Leblanc until 1952. Among the principal artists reproduced by the firm were Antoine Louis Barye and Auguste Rodin. The Dying Galata (Italian: Galata morente...

Sculpture Sandstone Carved Figurative The Thinker
Located in BUNGAY, SUFFOLK
The Thinker Mid-Century Modern, sandstone sculpture depicting a seated man, artist unknown This Mid-Century Modern interpretation of The Thinker interprets the pain, release and liberation associated with free-thinking. The man conveys vulnerability, tenderness and acceptance, his body yielding into the support of the chair creating a sense of rest and peace. Provenance: Private Collection acquired from The Hidden Gallery, Scotland Measures: Height 50cm.,20" Length 33cm., 15" Depth 22cm., 81/2" The Thinker - Auguste Rodin (1840 -1917). Cast made by Fonderie Alexis Rudier in 1904. Transfered to the musée Rodin in 1922. When conceived in 1880 in its original size (approx. 70 cm) as the crowning element of The Gates of Hell, seated on the tympanum, The Thinker was entitled The Poet. He represented Dante, author of the Divine Comedy which had inspired The Gates, leaning forward to observe the circles of Hell, while meditating on his work. The Thinker was therefore initially both a being with a tortured body, almost a damned soul, and a free-thinking man, determined to transcend his suffering through poetry. The pose of this figure owes much to Carpeaux’s Ugolino (1861) and to the seated portrait of Lorenzo de’ Medici carved by Michelangelo (1526-31). While remaining in place on the monumental Gates...

After Michelangelo's 'non-finito' Series Classical Nude Bronze, Green Patina
Located in Chicago, IL
This is an extraordinary bronze sculpture of a Classic male nude by artist Dean Kugler. Attention to detail and complete understanding of the human figure are evident. The figure stands with most of his weight on one foot, contrapposto, and his arm stretched overhead revealing a powerful, muscular physique. With inspiration from Michelangelo's unfinished series of sculptures housed at the Galleria Dell'Acadamia Museum in Florence, displayed in the hall leading to Michelangelo's David sculpture, this figure too is bound within its own material symbolizing the eternal human struggle to free themselves from material trappings. The sculpture is beautifully custom mounted on a stone base. Dean Kugler Slave (after Michelangelo) bronze Measures: 20 H x 5 W x 5 D in 50.80 H x 12.70 W x 12.70 D cm DK0035 Kugler uses scale and the juxtaposition of disparate elements in order to engage and challenge the viewer. He combines elements such as strength and weakness or beauty and damage to be experienced simultaneously within the same piece of work to create a tense energy. Kugler also incorporates the technical skill of tight rendering with the dynamism of abstraction to create this energy to add additional excitement and intrigue to his aesthetic.   Dean Kugler is a seasoned interdisciplinary artist, painter, and figurative sculptor. His 3D work is featured primarily at Gallery Victor Armendariz in Chicago. In the last three years, Dean has also been featured at Abend Gallery in Denver, The Figge Art Museum, and Bereskin Gallery in Iowa. He has shown at SOFA Chicago in 2017, 2018, and 2019 and participated in ArtPrize in 2013, 2014, and 2015. He sees himself primarily as a sculptor due to the challenges he finds and thrives on within the process. In all its beauty, crudeness, and subtleties, the figure offers infinite opportunities to express feelings and emotions. There is also a physicality to sculpture that requires the work to be experienced through movement in order to reveal more about the piece. Dean has always been drawn to the interactive nature of large-scale sculpture that is available to the public - he loves the idea that his work entices the observer to go beyond what they can see and add tactility to the experience. By using both realism and abstraction, he creates a visual that challenges the viewer to resolve what they are seeing. Therefore, providing a greater connection between the artist and the viewer. Building and Garden Elements: Vintage, New and Antique Statues

Antique, new and vintage statues can bring depth and distinctive charm to your home’s interiors or your meticulously maintained outdoor garden area.

Introduce an assortment of textures and colors as well as a refreshing air of drama by decorating with stoic sculptural works in any living room, dining room or bedroom, no matter the size or shape of the statues you choose. You don’t have to haul a 19th-century life-size hand-carved work of Italian Carrara marble into your hallway unless, of course, that is the kind of decorative touch that your interior would benefit from. A large sculpture bust placed in your happy home office or positioned as a centerpiece on a table with other decorative objects in your foyer, for example, can prove welcoming to guests and invite rich conversation about your interests.

For a sculpture, an outdoor setting on a lawn or in a garden can open up a whole new world of beauty and meaning. While traditional stone cherub figures can promise tranquility, you can heighten the ogs/the-study/outdoor-dining-spaces/ target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">experience of outdoor family meals or garden parties with provocative statues to help frame the dining area in your yard. Lend an air of permanence to the perimeter of your garden with a pair of bronze lion statues or use abstract works of metal to contrast the clean, geometric lines of your manicured shrubbery and thoughtful landscape design.

We know that your garden is an invaluable retreat for when you need some relaxation and that introducing art to your home’s interiors has innumerable benefits. On 1stDibs, find a wide variety of antique, new and vintage statues for all of your decorating needs.
