Fine and unusual signed Edward F. Caldwell & Co. Neoclassical style silvered bronze box depicting a pair of winged angels playing music at an altar. One angel plays a lyre and the other an aulos or double flute, flanked by impressive torcheres bearing pine cones and surrounded by a wide border of olive leaves and olive fruit. Creamware is the name given to a type of earthenware pottery initially made from white clays from Dorset and Devonshire combined with an amount of calcined flint.
Creamware was first produced in England sometime before 1740. Foremost of the pioneers of creamware in the Staffordshire Potteries was Thomas Whieldon.
