About the Item

This exquisite pair of bronze candlesticks by Tiffany Studios New York, have three root feet leading to a slender, tapering stem. The stem supports a bulbous candle cup with bronze bobeche inserts. The design of the root candlesticks was inspired by the statuesque roots of the mangrove tree, which thrives along the lush Florida coast. Product Details: Item #: T-21501 Artist: Tiffany Studios New York Country: United States Circa: 1900 Dimensions: 12.75" height Materials: Bronze Signed: Tiffany Studios New York 1200 Literature: A similar candlestick is pictured in: A. Duncan, Tiffany Lamps and Metalware: An illustrated reference to over 2000 models, Suffolk, Woodbridge, 2019, pp. 408-409, figs. 1674, 1676 (similar examples of model 1200). Macklowe Gallery's Curator's Notes: Tiffany's fascination with Florida began in 1884 when he accompanied his wife Louis to St. Augustine. Starting in 1909 Tiffany made annual winter visits to Miami until he eventually settled in his final estate, Comfort Lodge located on the prestigious Millionaire's row. Appropriately, his estate was beautifully surrounded by ancient mangroves.

Pair of Tiffany Studios New York "Globe" Glass and Bronze Chandeliers
By Louis Comfort Tiffany, Tiffany Studios
Located in New York, NY
This enchanting pair of Tiffany Studios New York "hanging globe" chandeliers are composed of two reticulated glass shades. Tiffany’s idea of blowing glass through openwork bronze had evolved in the 1890s with a series of Byzantine revival fuel lamps. The technique was popularized by 19th-century Muranese Glassmakers Salvati as a derivation of the Ancient Roman cage cup (vasa diatreta). In the 4th century, Roman glassmakers encased blown glass vessels in a delicate cage of glass. In Tiffany’s version, glass is blown through an ogival pattern cage. Originating in 11th-century Byzantine textiles, the ogival pattern became established in Italy, Ottoman Turkey, North Africa, and as far west as the Balkans.
