Charles X Ormolu and Malachite Equestrian Mantel Clock

About the Item

Charles X ormolu and malachite equestrian mantel clock French, Early 19th century Measures: Height 50cm, width 34cm, depth 15cm In a malachite veneered case and mounted with ormolu decorations and sculptural surmount, this fine mantel clock is a Charles X gilt timepiece, made c.1840, and mounted with a superb racehorse sculpture on top. The movement itself and the dial are stamped 'Boudin Sr. de Souriau Hr. du Roi,' marking it as the work of A.E. Bourdin, a 'Horloger du Roi,' active in the early-mid 19th century, c.1840-70. He worked notably at Rue de la Paix 24, as this clock shows, at other addresses in Paris, and his work was acclaimed in his life-time, winning silver and bronze medals at Exhibitions in Paris for this superlative work. The fine sculpture on this piece renders it of particular interest for the collector with a penchant for equestrian works and art. The marble of the original has since been replaced with malachite, affording it a wonderfully vibrant and lively quality.
