Jaeger LeCoultre, Nickel Plated Atmos Clock, Swiss Made in 1956

About the Item

Silver Atmos clock by Jaeger LeCoultre Switzerland Nickel-plated brass Year of manufacture 1956 Dimensions: H x W x D: 22 x 18 x 13.5 cm Description: Atmos V calibre 526 in a nickel-plated case. White dial ring with silver numerals 3, 6, 9, 12 and indices for the remaining hours. As is usual with the early dials - with horizontal 3 and horizontal 9. Serial number: 99354 Year of manufacture: 1956 Interesting facts: Even though Leonardo da Vinci was able to prove that the production of a perpetual motion machine is physically impossible, it has been attempted time and again. This was also the case for Neuchâtel engineer Jean Leon Reutter, who in 1926 invented the technology for a clock whose energy source is drawn from the ambient air, from the atmosphere so to speak. In 1927, Reutter presented the prototype of his clock and in 1928 he was granted a patent for his ATMOS I. As there were repeated problems with the production, the movements were manufactured by Le Coultre et Cie in Switzerland from 1933 and in 1935 the production rights for the Atmos clock were transferred to Ets. Ed. Jaeger. The technical principle of the movements built by Jaeger LeCoultre from 1936 onwards is simply captivating: a mixture of a liquid and ethyl chloride gas is contained in a hermetically sealed capsule. As the temperature rises, the mixture expands, and as the temperature falls, it contracts, causing a bellows in the pressure box on the back of the clock to move like an accordion. This movement continuously winds up the movement. In the range between 15 and 30°C, a change in temperature of just one degree Celsius is enough to provide the energy for approximately two days of running time. Condition: Excellent condition. The movement has been nickel-plated and overhauled; it runs perfectly and reliably. The case has also been nickel-plated and is in perfect condition. You will find interesting facts about the ATMOS from Jaeger LeCoultre in the specialist literature: Jean Lebet - Living on Air

Jaeger LeCoultre, Atmos Fontainebleu, Swiss Made in 1986
By Jaeger-LeCoultre
Located in Greven, DE
Jaeger LeCoultre - Atmos Fontainebleu Switzerland Year of construction 1986 Dimensions: H x W x D: 25 x 20 x 16 cm Description: Atmos calibre 540 in the rare "Fontainebleu" version in a wooden case. Square ring dial with rounded corners. Roman numerals for hours, fine minute track, Breguet hands with counterweights. "SWISS MADE" is printed below the 6. A manufacturer's engraving and the calibre number can be found on the front movement plate. A "Jaeger LeCoultre" imprint can be seen at the bottom right of the front disc. The Atmos Fontainebleu was listed in the collection from 1987. It was available in various versions - with a square or round dial, with a moon phase, with a black lacquered or mahogany case. Although the clock offered here dates from 1986, it was only listed in the 1987 and 1988 catalogues. Ref. 220.030.4 Serial number: 620514 Year of manufacture: 1986. Condition: Freshly overhauled, very good condition of the movement. Flawless case condition. Interesting facts: Generations of inventors have endeavoured to construct a perpetual motion machine - and one after the other was disappointed to discover that their designs did not work. Today we know that it is technically impossible to build a machine that works continuously without consuming energy. Apart from wear and tear, a machine only works as long as it is supplied with energy: Electricity, gas, petrol... Without human intervention and practically without wear and tear, the Atmos does not run without energy consumption, but it is fed by an energy source that can be described as "eternal": It draws its energy from the constant fluctuations in air temperature. The Atmos literally lives from the air. In order to utilise the temperature fluctuations as an energy source, a suitable medium had to be found. The choice fell on ethyl chloride (C2H5Cl) - a substance that dentists know as an anaesthetic. Ethyl chloride has a very high coefficient of thermal expansion between 10 and 27°C, i.e. the volume change is particularly large in this temperature range. The round can...
