Portable typwriter valentine by Ettore Sottsass / Perry King for Olivetti

About the Item

The Olivetti Valentine is a portable, mechanical, travel typewriter that was manufactured by the Italian company Olivetti from 1969 to 2000. It is known for its unconventional design, which was created by the Italian designer Ettore Sottsass together with Perry A. King. It is considered a milestone in industrial design, which is why almost all important design collections own examples of it, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The case of the travel typewriter is made of the thermoplastic material ABS and measures approximately 11.7 cm × 34.3 cm × 35.2 cm. The box is carried by the folding handle and placed upright on the floor like a briefcase. This allows the machine to be pulled upwards out of the box after opening two locking clips on the carrying handle. It was initially manufactured in Italy, later in Spain and finally in Mexico. Numerous intellectuals, particularly on the left-wing spectrum, used an Olivetti Valentine. The product became a symbol of an anti-culture (under the slogan: "for all places except the office"). One owner of an Olivetti Valentine is Braun designer Dieter Rams. David Bowie also owned this typewriter, on which, according to his own account, he wrote many song lyrics. Bowie's machine was auctioned at Sotheby's in November 2016 for GBP 45,000.

the french janine abraham and the dutch dirk jan rol met for the first time in 1955 in jacques dumonds studio. it immediately clicked, both privately and professionally. their first jointly designed furniture was shown at the salon des artistes decorateurs in 1956. in 1957 they opened a joint design studio. sometimes one plus one can make more than two, they say: the clash of rigour and straightforwardness with fantasy and intuition makes the combination of abraham and rol so special and productive. it resulted in many great designs, especially the wonderful bamboo chairs like this beautiful piece. a pair of basketware lounge chairs with black metal...
