A pair of Japanese underglaze blue and white porcelain baluster vases from the late 19th century painted with shaped panels of flowers, insects and birds. Formerly in the Kentshire collection, each piece features a round panel with a fly on a prunus branch, naturalistically painted in cobalt blue on a white ground. Another shaped panel presents two charming birds on a branch painted by a free, fluid hand with shading and brushstrokes. Watery blue peonies, auspicious symbols of springtime and prosperity, emerge from a dense cobalt blue background of tight arabesques motifs arranged in a most delicate composition.
