Medieval English Alabaster Statue
Located in Wormelow, Herefordshire
A medieval English alabaster statue, possibly dating as far back as the late 14th / early 15th century, mounted on one of our exclusive large display plinths. Well weathered over the centuries, this 600-year-old statue depicts a medieval cloaked figure, possibly a monk, offering a glimpse into English architecture and sculpture of the Middle Ages. This sculpture is possibly made from Nottingham alabaster. During the 14th and 15th centuries, Nottingham was the centre of alabaster carving and painting. Alabaster works were mostly made as small alabaster models with religious themes. During the 16th century Reformation, many alabaster carvings were destroyed under King Henry VIII's rule, making any surviving examples even more significant. Provenance From the collection of Peter Hone (b. 1941). A master plaster caster, he is an expert and experienced collector, building up an extraordinary, museum-worthy collection of items in his one-bedroom flat in London W11...

Natural Chrysocolla Malachite Specimen
Located in Wormelow, Herefordshire
A large scale natural chrysocolla malachite specimen originating from Congo. A rare find, some of the world’s finest malachite comes from Congo. This exceptional mineral has an irregular form that has been moulded by nature over thousands of years. Showcasing a vibrant combination of vivid blues (chrysocolla) and rich greens (malachite), this specimen is a striking sculptural piece for an interior or collector’s cabinet, mounted on a bespoke steel stand for display. First discovered over 4000 years ago, malachite has been adored for its colour and beauty since ancient times. While a popular item for jewels and amulets, the mineral was often ground down and the pigment used as a luscious green paint for architecture or even a vivid green eyeshadow! Chrysocolla is frequently intergrown with other minerals such as quartz and malachite like...

Museum Quality Pre-Columbian Gold Twin Figures Pendant, circa 800 to 1500 AD
Located in San Pedro Garza Garcia, Nuevo Leon
Southern Costa Rica/Western Panama, circa 800 to 1500 AD. Gold Veraguas-Chiriqui-Diquis twin figure pendant cast by the lost-wax (cire perdu) grasping an imaginary club with their claws, with bat ears and pop out eyes and each figure ending in the shape of a jaguar tooth, symbolizing the power of the jaguar and the ability to see in the dark; The casting process did not go entirely smoothly. Part of his mold, on the side of the proper right figure (viewer's left side), did not fill with metal. The Pre-Columbian goldsmith carried out a superb repair, probably making a wax patch and pouring gate on the gold pendant, then enclosing it in a new mold and pouring in more metal. The patch is hardly visible on the outside. A modern goldsmith, who cannot do it as well, would use his gas torch to solder on a patch. The gold is of such high grade or karat, possibly unalloyed native gold...

Supernatural Being, Pre-Columbian Gold Pendant, Costa Rica, circa 800 to 1500 AD
Located in San Pedro Garza Garcia, Nuevo Leon
Southern Costa Rica or Western Panama, circa 800 to 1500 AD. A very fine example of the goldwork of the Veraguas-Chiriqui-Diquis region. A pendant in Carbonera style of a supernatural being, a composite monster with human torso and feline (probably jaguar) head. The figure is set in a frame decorated with little animal heads, one at each corner. The hands have also turned into animal heads. In place of genitalia is a stylized serpent head suspended by a twisted cord that was supposed to continue across the frame. A minor casting accident prevented it form being attached to the frame. A modern goldsmith would solder in two short lengths of twisted wire, but the ancient goldsmith did not have the equipment to make such repair. A double thread ending in spirals goes across the frame behind the neck of the figure, helping to fill up the frame and avoiding a large empty space. The word "thread" reminds us that the twisted and straight cords were, in the original wax model of the pendant really extruded wax threads, turned into metal by the lost wax (cire perdue) process. The braid pattern on the frame is illusory, just two twisted threads of extruded wax laid side by side. The goldsmith made the toes out of extruded wax thread too, very decorative as well. The piece comes with a certificate of authenticity by Mr. Robert Sonin, 5 May 2006. ref. photo roll 3301. A world renowned expert on Pre-Columbian Artifacts...

Pair of Korean Goryeo Dynasty Bronze Pedestal Bowls, 13th-15th Century, Korea
Located in Austin, TX
An exquisite pair of Korean bronze pedestal offering bowls, Goryeo Dynasty, 13th-15th century, Korea. The Goryeo bronze bowls of generous proportions, with high sides and an ever so slightly everted rim. The bowls are supported on a pedestal base with a tall stem and wide, splayed ring foot. The bowls plain, save for a single engraved line circumscribing the splayed foot. The bowls with an amazingly rich and complex patina of mottled reddish browns from cuprite and dark greens from malachite. The bronze heavily cleaned to the European taste, removing most of the encrustations. Some areas of the bowls with rougher areas where the accretions could not be removed. Crafted in two parts in the spun bronze technique, then joined. The bowls are unusually thin for bronze, with the lathe lines still visible to the undersides. An unusual form and size for Goryeo period bronze utensils...
