Engraving "Dressing For The Masquerade" Late 18th by Bartolozzi GEORGE MORLAND
About the Item
Very nice engraving "dressing for the masquerade" by Francesco Bartolozzi after the painting by George Morland. It represents 3 characters in a rural interior. A woman is putting on some nice clothes while someone seems to help her, while having a conversation with a seated man. A dog observes the scene from his chair.
It was engraved by Francesco Bartolozzi, Italian engraver, son of goldsmith, born in 1727 and died in 1815. He studied 3 years after the painter Domenico Ferretti, then, he will understand that he is not made for the painting and that it is the engraving that attracts him more. He will therefore leave for Venice to perfect his art. For 6 years, from 1745 to 1751, he worked in the workshop of Joseph Wagner (German engraver). About ten years later, he was invited to London by the art dealer and bookseller to the king, Richard Dalton. In will settle there and will be engraver of the king George 3. He developed the new technique of "red chalk". He was also a founding member of the Royal Academy and co-founder of the Society of Engravers.
This engraving is inspired by a painting by George Morland, English painter and engraver (1763-1804). He studied with his father and exhibited his first drawings at the Royal Academy at only 10 years old. He attended the academic school and even refused an apprenticeship with Romney (a famous English painter). He will find his style only in the past 1790's and will begin the realization of large canvases. He will have a tragic end of life, just like his life in general, mixed with water of life and despair. To his credit, he realized more than a thousand paintings and is very famous in all Europe.

Gerard Ter Borch Genre Scene "The Two Drinkers" Engraving 18th Century
By Gerard ter Borch the Younger
Located in Beuzevillette, FR
Humorous engraving typical of Flemish representations of the 18th century, representing two seated drinkers . We can see a woman with a glass in her left hand and a carafe in her right, while a man who probably drunk sleeps on the table.
Beautiful achievement typical of the Flemish school of the 17th century.
Gerard ter Borch - or Terburg - also known as "the young man" was born in 1617 in Zwolle near Amsterdam and died in 1681 in Deventer. He worked as a genre painter and portraitist and was very active especially in Münster and Amsterdam.
He discovered his talent for drawing at the age of eight and became a pupil of his father Gerard ter Borch, known as "the old man". The Dutch painter Hendrick Avercamp supported Terburg. He studied with Pieter de Molyn (Dutch painter, draughtsman, engraver and publisher) for three years (1632-1635). He travelled extensively between London, Germany, France and Italy. He in turn became the master of his pupil Caspar Netscher...

Nicolas Lancret « the Game of Hide and Seek » Engraving 18th Century
By Nicolas Lancret 1
Located in Beuzevillette, FR
This wonderful engraving belongs to a set of three engravings representing children's games. This series dates from the 18th century. It consists of the game of hide and seek, the game of the four corners and the game of the ox leg.
The scene depicted here is immersed in an abundance of nature. In the centre is a young girl walking away with her eyes poorly concealed. A young man is also walking away in the opposite direction, holding a handkerchief in his left hand. Behind them, seven other girls are sitting down and seem to be paying no attention to the two young men in the foreground. In the background is a bust resting on a pillar, all decorated with roses.
