Art Deco Figurative Sculptures

ART DECO STYLE

Art Deco furniture is characterized by its celebration of modern life. More than its emphasis on natural wood grains and focus on traditional craftsmanship, vintage Art Deco dining chairs, tables, desks, cabinets and other furniture — which typically refers to pieces produced during the 1920s and 1930s — is an ode to the glamour of the “Roaring Twenties.”

ORIGINS OF ART DECO FURNITURE DESIGN

CHARACTERISTICS OF ART DECO FURNITURE DESIGN

  • Bold geometric lines and forms, floral motifs
  • Use of expensive materials such as shagreen or marble as well as exotic woods such as mahogany, ebony and zebra wood
  • Metal accents, shimmering mirrored finishes
  • Embellishments made from exotic animal hides, inlays of mother-of-pearl or ivory

ART DECO FURNITURE DESIGNERS TO KNOW

VINTAGE ART DECO FURNITURE ON 1STDIBS

Few design styles are as universally recognized and appreciated as Art Deco. The term alone conjures visions of the Roaring Twenties, Machine Age metropolises, vast ocean liners, sleek typography and Prohibition-era hedonism. The iconic movement made an indelible mark on all fields of design throughout the 1920s and ’30s, celebrating society’s growing industrialization with refined elegance and stunning craftsmanship.

Widely known designers associated with the Art Deco style include Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann, Eileen Gray, Maurice Dufrêne, Paul Follot and Jules Leleu.

The term Art Deco derives from the name of a large decorative arts exhibition held in Paris in 1925. “Art Deco design” is often used broadly, to describe the work of creators in associated or ancillary styles. This is particularly true of American Art Deco, which is also called Streamline Moderne or Machine Age design. (Streamline Moderne, sometimes known as Art Moderne, was a phenomenon largely of the 1930s, post–Art Nouveau.)

Art Deco textile designers employed dazzling floral motifs and vivid colors, and while Art Deco furniture makers respected the dark woods and modern metals with which they worked, they frequently incorporated decorative embellishments such as exotic animal hides as well as veneers in their seating, case pieces, living room sets and bedroom furniture.

From mother-of-pearl inlaid vitrines to chrome aviator chairs, bold and inventive works in the Art Deco style include chaise longues (also known as chaise lounges) and curved armchairs. Today, the style is still favored by interior designers looking to infuse a home with an air of luxury and sophistication.

The vintage Art Deco furniture for sale on 1stDibs includes dressers, coffee tables, decorative objects and more.

French Art Déco Bronze Antilope Scultpure on Stone Base by Max Le Verrier 1920s
Located in Salzburg, AT
Very finely crafted bronze sculpture from the period of French Art Deco. Attributed to the sculptur Max Le Verrier. The antelope is jumping, the dynamics and movement of the animal is very well captured in the depiction. The bronze is brown, the horns a little darker. The object rests on a stepped natural stone base which gives the whole a special sophistication. Biography Louis Octave Maxime Le Verrier, short Max Le Verrier (born January 29, 1891 in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France; † June 6, 1973 in Paris, France) was a French sculptor. Le Verrier was the son of a Parisian goldsmith and jeweler; his mother was from Belgium. His parents separated when he was seven years old. He attended several boarding schools, including the École des Roches in Verneuil-sur-Avre. Against Max's wishes, his father sent him to study agriculture at Saint-Sever and La Réole. At the age of 16, he returned to Paris and took odd jobs to avoid working in agriculture. In 1909, he left France and moved to London for a short time, where he found it difficult to find work. Le Verrier worked at a flying school in Rendon, where he first serviced aircraft and then earned his pilot's license in 1913. During World War I, he saw action in a French bomber squadron beginning in February 1915. On May 25, 1915, he was shot down in a dogfight by a German fighter plane...

An original patinated bronze bust by Amedeo Gennarelli, circa 1925. This slightly nude model is depicted from her shoulder looking forward with a stylized turban on her head. a stunning deep bronze patina signed in the cast ‘A.Genneralli’. The model has a beautiful face with a realistic depiction of lips, nose, and overall features. Each angle from the front, back, or side equally depicts the quality and beauty of this unique bronze. In addition to the signature in the lower cast, on the back of that case is also the words, “cire perdue” which indicates it is the “lost wax” process, certainly made in France. The fantastic patina on this piece. Amedeo Gennarelli (Naples 1891-Paris 1943) was an important Italian sculptor during the Art Deco period in France. A student of Francesco Jerace...

Edgardo Simone, (Italian/American, 1890-1948) Classically trained in Italy at the Beaux Arts Academy in Rome from 1906 to 1913, Edgardo Simone became a famous sculptor in Italy and the United States using mediums of terracotta, ceramic, bronze, and plaster. He earned a Doctorate of Design and Sculpture at the Academy and then emigrated to the United States where he worked in New York, Chicago and southern California. His style was influenced by Art Nouveau, Art Deco and other modernist influences. In Italy, he had received three times the Croix de Guerre and was decorated by King Victor Emmanuel II and Queen Margherita. Before moving to America, he had much recognition in Italy. He had created war and city monuments, and tombstones in twenty-six Italian cities. When he arrived in New York City, one of the newspapers carried a headline: "Italy's greatest Sculptor Arrives in New York." In New York, Simone became prominent in society and did many portrait busts including such of Thomas Edison, John J. Pershing, Henry Ford and Louis Brandeis.
