Raymond Phillips Sanderson Sculpture 1937
By Raymond Phillips Sanderson
Located in St.Petersburg, FL
Unusual highly stylized wood carved sculpture by Raymond Phillips Sanderson, signed and dated 1937. Known for his interest in Southwest themes and influence of Art Deco-this is an excellent example. A note about the artist: "Raymond Phillips Sanderson (1908–1987) was an American artist and sculptor. Sanderson was born in Bowling Green, Missouri and educated at the Art Institute of Chicago under Raoul Josset. He moved to Bisbee, Arizona for his health in 1932, where he worked as an illustrator and sign painter. His first major commission was the Miner's Monument at the Cochise County Courthouse in Bisbee, popularly known as the Copper Man, as well as some reliefs in the interior of the courthouse. He moved to Phoenix in 1937 to teach at the Phoenix Art Center under sponsorship by the Works Progress Administration. In 1939 he was commissioned by industrialist Rufus Riddlesbarger to outfit and decorate his new house at Riddlesbarger's Lanteen Ranch near Sierra Vista. Sanderson received several significant commissions starting in 1940. Working for the United States Maritime Commission, Sanderson sculpted a series of wood relief panels...

"Triton, Merman and Mermaid, " Sculptural Vase w/ Aquatic Motif and Nudes in Blue
By Edgardo Simone
Located in Philadelphia, PA
A masterful -- and brilliantly-hued -- example of high style Art Deco sculpture, this large and unique vase depicts several nude figures along its upper edge -- a Triton blowing his shell-horn on one side and a nude merman and mermaid embracing on the other. The sides of the vase are enlivened by a series of jumping dolphins, and the entire surface is glazed in streaky blues, pale greens and rich browns. The artist was Edgardo Simone, an eccentric and brilliant sculptor who worked in bronze, plaster and ceramics over several decades. He was born in Italy and trained in Rome, but spent much of his career in America, specializing in portrait busts. He sculpted the likenesses of Thomas Edison, John Pershing, Henry Ford, Louis Brandeis, Sally Rand, President Franklin Roosevelt...

Fred Press, American Art Deco, Painted Plaster Bust of a Faun, ca. 1930s
By Fred Press
Located in New York, NY
Signed ‘Fred Press’ on back FRED PRESS (American, 1919 – 2012) was born to Samuel and Rose Press, who emigrated from Russia in the early 1900’s. He was the fourth of five children. He was married to Alice Bernadette for over 60 years and they had three children, David, Peter and Christopher. At an early age Fred showed his sculpting prowess as the Ivory Soap contest winner in the early 1930’s. During his contemporary stage, he created numerous sculptures with bold design choices and unique subject matter. Fred’s sculptures reflect both historically significant figures and time periods but he also showed a more fanciful side with sculptures depicting mythical folklore using the likeness of some of his relatives. His subject matter also reflected the people and cultures he came into contact with while a member of the Sixth Air Force Division stationed in the Panama Canal Zone...

A Set of Black Americana Baseball Memorabilia Folk Art Figures, Circa 1930s-40s
Located in Atlanta, GA
This collection of three Black Americana baseball figures, circa 1930s-1940s, are attributed to the San Antonio folk artist, Control Valadez. The set of Black memorabilia, sometimes called Black Americana, includes a pitcher, catcher & batter, each having been set and raised onto a custom iron base. They are all quite chippy with losses, nice patina and showing of age, still retaining much of their original paint colors. Likely once outdoor ornaments, we would suggest, due to their delicate condition, that these pieces remain indoors. Though historically, much black memorabilia portrayed racist and offensive ideas, there was also art, such as this collection, which reflects a more positive connotation, commemorating athletic achievements within the black community. These nicely sized baseball sculptures...

"Portrait of Young Woman, " Masterpiece by John Gregory, Folger Library Sculptor
By John Gregory
Located in Philadelphia, PA
An extraordinary piece of American sculpture, this depiction of a young woman, dated 1930, was sculpted in white marble by John Gregory -- who executed 9 large bas relief panels for the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C. -- for Paul Philippe Cret, who was the Library's architect. Clearly Gregory and Cret were friends as well as colleagues, and this sculpture may have been executed as a gesture of appreciation from Gregory to Cret; indeed, the Library's cornerstone was laid the same year this sculpture was created. Gregory is also known for his "Orpheus" bronze at Brookgreen Gardens in South Carolina, and an equestrian sculpture of General Anthony Wayne...
