Meissen Group 'Allegory Of The Volga' for Catherine II of Russia, Kaendler, 1850
Located in Vienna, AT
Very rare and excellent porcelain sculpture: Kändler created this group in 1772, right at the beginning of the work on the large order, as a personification of one of the two great main rivers of the vast Russian Empire, the natural waterways Volga and Dnieper, important for economy and traffic, which promised prosperity and wealth to the Empire: The Volga in the form of a river god, seated sideways on heavily relieved fully sculptured rock covered with shells and coins as well as fern and reed plants, fully bearded and crowned with laurel, wrapped in floral patterned purple loincloth. He looks pensively to the side and rests his right arm on an overturned baluster vase, from which water flows together with shells and fish, on the wall of the vase the crowned, rocaille-framed Polish-Lithuanian royal coat of arms with the coat of arms of the Electorate of Saxony. At the same time he touches with his hand an oar with gold ornamentation and crossed red swords, in his left he holds a cornucopia with plastic flowers, ears of grain and coins, symbols of fertility and wealth. The group is based on the front curved plinth with relief gold heightened meander and ribbon border. The design of this group belongs to the models of the 'Great Russian Order...

Meissen Large Allegorical Group 'The Fire' by M.V. Acier, Germany Around 1850
Located in Vienna, AT
Excellent Meissen porcelain group of the 19th century: Depiction of the merely cloth-covered, bearded and crowned god Hephaestus (Roman: Vulcanus) seated centrally on a rock, holding a long-handled hammer beside him and looking off to the side, surrounded by winged putti representing activities from his trade: Patronizing the entire artistic spectrum of metalworking, including the production of jewelry, weapons, sacred-ritual and profane utilitarian objects, the one helping putto to his right is busy firing a cannon made of metal, to his left another putto is forging on an anvil with the help of a hammer and tongs, in front of him, at his feet are presented ornately crafted war ornaments such as a helmet and shield, at the back a putto holds small torches in both hands. The group is based on irregular rock base with gold rim. Designer: MICHAEL VICTOR ACIER (1736 Versailles - 1799 Dresden) Trained as a sculptor in Paris, he received a call to the porcelain factory in Meissen in 1762: he created a large number of groups in the Watteau style...

White Bisque Porcelain Antique Cherub Statue
Located in Wormelow, Herefordshire
A large-scale white bisque porcelain putto or cherub statue standing on an ornate bombe plinth by 19th century French ceramicist Gille Jeune. Dating from the 1860s, this statue is over 150 years old. It depicts an infant – known as a cherub or putto – wearing a head band with a swathe of fabric draped over his arm and thigh. He sits upon a tree stump or rock with his arms raised and castanets in his hands. Thanks to its scale and provenance, it is a breath-taking statue for an interior or gallery, both the putto and the plinth inscribed with the maker’s mark ‘Gille Jne, Fabt. Paris’. Gille Jeune, Paris Parisian ceramist Jean-Baptiste Gille (1798-1868) was one of the leading manufacturers of French bisque porcelain - also known as biscuit porcelain - of the 19th century. In 1836, he established his own porcelain factory in Paris under the name ‘Gille Jeune’. His work was displayed in many prestigious exhibitions including London’s 1851 Great Exhibition where he was awarded a prize medal, the 1862 exhibition in London and the Paris exhibition in 1867. Four of his cherub works in the same style and scale reside at Hughenden House in Buckinghamshire as part of the National Trust’s collection. These include two of Gille’s depictions of the four seasons and a putto playing a flute as well as a putto with castanets like this one dating from 1855-1864. For this reason, we can say with some certainty that this antique cherub statue...

Excellent Meissen Rococo Love Group 'The Test Of Love', by M.V. Acier, Ca 1860
Located in Vienna, AT
Excellent Rococo love group in splendid clothes in front of ornate column monument: the gallant sitting on the pedestal of the pedestal at the feet of his beloved, on his lap a basket full of flowers and a flower garland, a sign of his exuberant love, handing the beloved a bouquet of flowers, the latter plucking off the petals of a flower one after the other to find out whether he really loves her or not - a time-honored game of lovers. The group is characterized by particularly elaborate, detailed and loving design and staffage and is based on oval meadow base with gold heightened lateral frieze decoration and gold borders. A successful representation of one of the bourgeois themes that had become popular in the course of the 18th century, for example, through the paintings of Jean-Baptiste Greuze (1725 - 1805). Designed by MICHAEL VICTOR ACIER (1736 - 1799) Skilled as a sculptor in Paris, he received a call to the porcelain manufactory in Meissen in 1764, and was there, after Kaendler's death in 1775, solely responsible for the artistic interests of the manufactory. He created a large number of groups in the Watteau style...

19th Century French Bronze Reclining Greyhound by Christopher Fratin, 1801-1864
Located in Stamford, CT
Very sensitive rendering of a greyhound at rest with a rich dark brown patina with lighter highlights showing through. The dog is shown reclining with one paw turned up, a detail I find endearing as a dog owner, my border collie does this too! Mounted on a polished black slate base, marked Fratin on the base. Also stamped with the foundry mark 'Daubree, Editeur'. A fine desk top, shelf, or mantel piece for the dog lover, Christopher Fratin (1 January 1801 – 16 August 1864), also known as Christophe Fratin, was a noted French sculptor in the animalier style, and one of the earliest French sculptors to portray animals in bronze. Fratin was born in Metz, Moselle, France the son of a taxidermist. He first studied drawing under Pioche in Metz and later worked in Paris at the studio of Théodore Géricault. He exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1831 to 1842 and 1850–1862, as well as at the Great Exhibition in London in 1851. Fratin never signed his bronzes but instead used a stamp showing his last name in straight block letters. Fratin received monumental commissions in France and elsewhere, including the Deux Aigles Gardant Leur Proie (Eagles and Prey, created 1850) displayed since 1863 in New York City’s Central Park. Today, Fratin’s sculpture is on permanent display in the Louvre, the city museums of Metz, Lyon, Strasbourg, Nîmes and at the Peabody Institute in Baltimore, Maryland. The Georg Eisler...

Monumental Uffizi Boar or Il Porcellino by Austin and Seeley
By Austin & Seeley
Located in London, GB
A mid-19th century model of the Uffizi Boar, called 'Il Porcellino', by Austin & Seeley, the seated figure of the boar on an integral square plinth. This cast stone model of the Uffizi Boar takes its name from a 17th-century bronze fountain by sculptor Pietro Tacca, made for Cosimo II de' Medici and originally placed in the Loggia at the Mercato Nuovo in Florence. This civic space was also known as the Loggia del Porcellino, named after the boar as rubbing the statue's nose is said to bring great wealth. Made in the 1630s, it was modelled after an earlier marble version (Italian, 2nd-1st century BC) discovered in Rome in 1556 on the slopes of the Esquiline Hill, itself thought to be based on a lost Greek Hellenistic bronze version. After restoration, the marble statue was brought to Florence in 1568 as a gift from Pope Pius IV to Duke Cosimo I de’ Medici, initially placed in the Pitti Palace. Both this marble and the 17th-century bronze versions are now housed in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. It remained an immensely popular subject for Grand Tourists, who collected their own versions. It is a testament to the commercial prowess of Austin and Seeley...
