Large & Incredibly Detailed Midcentury Hand Carved Teak Elephant Sculpture Pair
Located in Lisse, NL
Good size and top quality carved wildlife sculptures. On the internet and in certain countries in the world you can find many hand carved wooden elephants, but they are mostly of poor to very poor quality when it comes to the actual details. These two impressive bull elephants on the other hand come with tremendous physical details and whomever hand carved this pair must have studied these majestic creatures for a long time. Besides that, he or she must have been a seasoned sculptor/wood-carver, because it takes a special kind of talent to reach this level of craftsmanship. We have searched the worldwide web and there is not a single wooden elephant sculpture out there that even comes close to having the same quality details and/or such perfect anotomy. It does not take a biologist to see that the artist has perfectly captured the soul of these ancient herbivors and therefor too they have great aesthetic and decorative value. Some of the amazing details of these sizable tuskers are their dried-leather-like skins. You just don't find carved elephants like that, because besides being extremely time consuming, it also takes great skill. Other great features/details are the loose skin around the hips and around the 'armpits', the trunks and mouths, the amazing body postures and ofcourse the stunning ears. They too are unlike anything we ever saw in an elephant sculpture. That too is why it did not take 30 seconds for us to know we had to have these in our gallery on 1stdibs (now also home to the most beautiful elephants on earth). Besides being more realistic than any wooden elephant we have seen or sold before, this pair also is fairly large in size. And with them being carved out of solid teakwood they have quite a bit of weight to them as well. Previous owners have clearly taken very, very good care of these midcentury carved elephants which is why they could not be in better condition either. We hope that by giving praise to the beauty of elephants in particular and acknowledging the importance of wildlife on our planet in general, that these stunning sculptures will help raise awareness so that mother nature will not one day be...

1950s Asian Handcrafted Wood Burmese String Opera Marionette Wall Decor
Located in North Hollywood, CA
Exquisite Vintage 1950s Handcrafted Wooden Marionette with Burmese String, Reflecting Asian Opera Artistry. This splendid Burmese-Thai marionette is a testament to masterful hand carving and intricate hand painting. Adorned with ornate fabrics in red and gold colors heavily embellished with beads, sequins, colored glass, embroidery, and gemstones, this marionette is a true work of art. Whether you choose to display it on your wall, use it as a mobile to bring color to a child's room, or incorporate it into your authentic boho and ethnic decor, it will captivate your senses. A fine representation of handcrafted village folk puppets from Asia, this marionette stands out for its unique quality. What sets marionettes apart from regular puppets is their manipulation through strings controlled from above, offering an unparalleled range of movement. Operating these strings demands a high level of skill, making marionettes a cherished form of puppetry. In Asia, marionette troupes were often sponsored and patronized by royalty, and while their performances were undoubtedly captivating and entertaining, they also served a significant cultural role. This marionette is not only a collector's delight but also a stunning piece of art. It portrays Minthar, the prince, in all his vintage glory...

Bronze Sculptured Statue of an Atlas - European Woodwork from 1960's
Located in Lisboa, PT
Fine wood hand carving from a tree depicting the figure of an Atlas. European artistry of the 1960's - Artist Unknown This beautiful piece of solid wood carved by the craftsman has been carefully transformed into a table and patted in Bronze. The superior part that can rest on his hands can be personalized and adapted - glass table top, marble table top, or even a scale right Globe if you wish. The topic of the "Atlas sculpture" typically refers to statues or sculptures depicting Atlas, a figure from Greek mythology. In Greek mythology, Atlas was a Titan condemned by Zeus to bear the weight of the heavens on his shoulders for eternity. The punishment was a consequence of Atlas leading the Titans in their war against the Olympian gods. The most famous representation of Atlas is often depicted as a muscular man carrying the celestial sphere on his shoulders. This image has been a popular subject in art and sculpture throughout history. Here are some key points in the history of Atlas sculptures: Ancient Greek and Roman Art: The story of Atlas has been a popular theme in ancient Greek and Roman art. Sculptors often depicted Atlas as a strong and stoic figure holding the celestial sphere. These sculptures were created in various materials, including marble and bronze. Renaissance and Baroque Periods: The themes of classical mythology experienced a revival during the Renaissance and Baroque periods in Europe. Artists like Michelangelo and Bernini incorporated Atlas and other mythological figures into their works. Atlas became a symbol of strength and endurance in these artistic representations. 18th and 19th Centuries: The neoclassical movement in the 18th and 19th centuries drew inspiration from classical Greek and Roman art. Atlas continued to be a popular subject during this period, with sculptors creating statues that emphasized the muscular and heroic qualities of the figure. Modern and Contemporary Art: The Atlas motif has persisted into modern and contemporary art. Artists often reinterpret the theme, exploring different styles and materials. Some sculptures may be more abstract or symbolic, while others adhere closely to the traditional representation. Public Art and Monuments: Atlas sculptures can be found in various public spaces around the world. Some cities have iconic statues of Atlas displayed...

Located in New York, NY
Signed CH.GROSS on the plinth with the artist's "fox stamp" below, and on the bottom of the base, as well. A beautifully carved modernist wood sculpture by well known and highly collectible New York artist, Chaim Gross (1904-1991). It is one of ten small versions of a 29" sculpture in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The sculpture is made of Lignum Vitae wood. The meaning of LIGNUM VITAE is the very hard heavy wood of any of several tropical American guaiacums. Guaiacum is of the caltrop family of tropical American evergreen trees and shrubs. Sometimes called guayacan or guaiacum, it is also known in parts of Europe as Pockholz or Pokhout. Due to its extreme hardness, the wood of such a tree is often used for making pulley blocks, mallet heads, bearings, etc. Provenance: Schrick private collection, Connecticut, USA. Chaim Gross (American, 1904-1991) was an Austrian born American sculptor. He was born in the then Austro-Hungarian village...
