Chinese Ming Dynasty Bronze Nanhai Guanyin, 16th/17th Century, China
Located in Austin, TX
A decidingly charming Chinese polychromed and gilt cast bronze figure of Nanhai Guanyin, Guanyin of the South Sea, Ming Dynasty, 16th/17th century, China. Guanyin, the bodhisattva of compassion, is portrayed here as a beatific figure seated upon a raised lotus pedestal over waves. Guanyin is dressed in heavy robes, and wears an elaborate headdress. The small figure of Amitabha Buddha in the headdress positively identifies this figure as Guanyin. Guanyin rests one hand in his lap, holding a cup of pure water said to be able to alleviate all suffering. His other hand is raised, holding a willow branch which is used to sprinkle the healing waters. The two lotus blossoms to either side of Guanyin would originally have supported figures of the acolytes...

Gaston Leroux Bronze Figure of Aida on a Sphinx, French, 19th Century
By Gaston Vuevenot Leroux
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Gaston Leroux (French, 1854-1942). A very fine French 19th century polychromed and patinated bronze sculpture of "Aida" resting on a sphinx, her legs crossed and holding a gilt-bronze tambourine, after the model by Gaston Veuvenot Leroux "Aida, A Femme Au Tambourin Assise Sur Une Tete De Sphinx". Signed: Gaston Leroux, Paris, circa 1890. Measures: Height 29 inches (74 cm). Width 15 inches (38.1 cm). Depth 15 inches (38.1 cm). The opulent and extensively detailed version of Aida was inspired by ethnographic findings of the mid-19th century in ancient Egypt as well as the influences of theatre and costume design. Travelers to the East had often recorded their journeys, either in writing or in pictures, but the movement of Egyptomania was wider-reaching than Egyptology. The immensely popular vogue of Egyptomania is without doubt due to the success of performing arts in recreating this era, in particular, Giuseppe Verdi's Aida. Both the Cairo and Paris premieres created sensations so large that they influenced generations of artists from Alexander Cabanel to Cecil de Mille. In Aida, the ruins of Egypt were brought back to life in full color and scale before the eyes of a generation that would make history as romantics, adventurers and explorers. The Cairo premier of Aida was entirely conceived by one of the foremost Egyptologists of the day, Auguste Mariette, who was assigned to the project by Khedive Ismail Pasha...

French Antique Bronze Torchiere Sculpture “Indienne Femme” by Emile Guillem
Located in Shippensburg, PA
Debuting at the Paris Salon in 1870, Emile Coriolan Hippolyte Guillemin modeled this sculpture in 1872. He became well-known for his exotic scenes of the Middle East, Africa and Far East, producing models of figures from far-flung regions: courtesans from Japan, women and men from Turkey and Algiers, hunters and falconers from the Middle East and women from India. The present example of Femme Indienne was modeled in 1872 and after acquiring the rights to produce this model and two other pairs of sculptures from Emile Guillemin, Barbedienne offered this sculpture in their 1886 catalogue as Deux Femmes, Indienne et Persane depicting both an Indian and a Persian female lifting torchieres in their upraised arms. They were offered in several heights: 200 cm, 120 cm, 95 cm and 78 cm and an example of the largest version of the pair were installed to flank the entrance to the Barbedienne estate - these were sold in 1984 (Hotel des Ventes) for 530,000 francs. Examples of Indienne selling at auction include: * Christie's, London, 5 March 2014, lot 108: achieved 47,500 GBP (approximately $ 78,375 USD at prevailing exchange rate of 1.65 on the date of the auction) * Christie's, New York, 23 April 2001, lot 292: achieved $ 30,550 USD * Christie's, London, 28 April 2010, lot 158: a pair including Femme Indienne and Esclave Indien achieved 49,250 GBP (approximately $ 72,300 USD at prevailing exchange rate of 1.47 on the date of the auction) * Bonham's, Los Angeles, 8 December 2014, lot 1389: a pair of Femme Indienne and Femme Persane in the largest size (76") achieved $ 131,000 USD It is always interesting to compare the French franc to the price of gold...

He attended school s in Michelstadt and had aspirations to become an engineer. Both of his parents died within a short time span when he was 15 and shortly thereafter he was apprenticed to the ivory carver Philipp Willmann and lived with his family. In 1901 he traveled to Rome and Paris. He became a friend and acquaintance of Arthur Kassler in Baden-Baden, which led to the founding of the company Preiss & Kassler operating from Berlin. Kassler became the business-minded partner and Preiss controlled artistic production. In 1907 he married Margarethe Hilme, producing two children, Harry and Lucie. Initially the company created small ivory carvings of children and statuettes of classical form, often carved from old ivory billiard balls. From 1910 the firm grew to specialize in limited edition Art Deco cabinet sculptures that used painted bronze with ivory...
