Birgitta Ara, Finnish (1934 - 2009) three bronze sculptures from 1980, edition number 2/12, each signed 'ara 2/12' (4) Birgitta Majlis Juslin, later Birgitta Ara, born 7 August 1934 in Helsinki. Parents singer and actor Ture Ara and public school teacher Elsie Juslin.
 Born in Helsinki in 1934, Ara studied decorative painting at the School of Art and Design from 1952-1955. Later she moved to Paris to model and eventually returned to her art by the 1970's when she exhibited copper sculpture reliefs at the Ecole Nationale Superiere des Arts. She won numerous awards, including the Prix des Jeunes in an exhibition for women's art at the Museum of Modern Art, and a relief was selected for the Salon d'Automne, the art salon in the Grand Palais. She received the Grand Prix de Sculpture at the International Exhibition for women's art in the National Museum of Modern Art in Paris. She eventually returned to Finland in 1991. This heavy centerpiece bowl dates to the late 19th century and is composed of cast iron with a gilt finish. The bowl has a shallow basin made up of a series of detailed open poppy blossoms and features a sleeping maiden curled up at one side. The bowl rests on an ornate dimensional foliate base. An immense and heavy bronze by the noted artist Jeff Day. he is currently in China but we managed to converse with him. He identified the work and the approximate year it was cast and how heard it was to make. He thinks he signed it although we can't find his mark. it is quite impressive and has a beautiful gold flecked patina. There is a fracture in the center small and hard to spot that occurred in the casting. This is a unique piece. There are some minor losses to the patina near the base and minor nicks and scratches. The base has been repaired in one corner. One other corner is missing the wood trim, pictured. The piece and shows its age with age appropriate wear. This is a rare and magnificent object fashioned from a rare coco de mer nut and Ostrich egg by Antony Redmile.
