About the Item

Highly unusual and very sensuous, this richly decorated Flambé vase by Gunnar Nylund for Rorstrand porcelain works depicts a group of four mermaids cavorting and dancing with an array of fish. Each of the figures is glazed in deep chocolate or ivory-hued tones, and are outlined in shimmering lines of gold. The vase is an especially remarkable example of the Art Deco porcelains designed by Nylund in what he called a "Flambé" glaze: rich browns or blue-grays highlighted with gold. Nylund worked at the famed Rorstrand porcelain works in Sweden from 1931 to 1958; and in his later years he became known for his organic forms and mottled glazes. The vase is well marked with the artist's name and the decorator's name on the bottom. The vase comes with two original newspaper articles in Swedish, clipped by an earlier owner, about Nylund's career in ceramic design, published in his later years.
