About the Item

An iconic Italian design object signed by Ettore Sottsass, this elegant umbrella stand with integrated ashtray was designed in the 1970s for Olivetti as part of the famous Synthesis Line, conceived for collective spaces, offices and cutting-edge professional environments. Made of molded thermoplastic resin in an intense, glossy burgundy-red hue, the piece is distinguished by its sculptural character, typical of Sottsass's design language: a perfect synthesis of functionality and radical aesthetics. The upper surface features an integrated ashtray with a regularly distributed hemispherical dome pattern, while the side walls feature a vertical groove pattern that enhances the geometric rigor It has several functions: Integrated ashtray on top with hemispherical relief surface Umbrella stand with rigid vertical structure Stackable design, lightweight yet stable Excellent vintage condition, with slight signs of age consistent with age and use A rare and original object, ideal for representative environments, creative studios, galleries, or for collectors and lovers of 20th century design. This piece is not only functional, but a true testament to the utopian and innovative vision of Sottsass, among the fathers of modern Italian design. This object was born within the historical collaboration between Ettore Sottsass and the entrepreneurial vision of Adriano Olivetti, a revolutionary figure in the Italian industrial world. Starting in the 1950s, Olivetti promoted design as a cultural and social tool, not just as an applied aesthetic. Sottsass, with his radical and poetic sensibility, helped transform the work environment into a more human, creative and inspiring place. The Synthesis Line is a perfect example: a collection of modular furniture designed to improve the efficiency of spaces without sacrificing beauty. For Olivetti, design was not an added value, but a central element of its corporate identity. From architecture to typewriters, every project was designed to serve man, facilitate work, and ennoble the everyday. The company has been a pioneer in conceiving aesthetics as part of function, and in enhancing the talents of designers and artists by integrating them into industrial processes. This approach has profoundly influenced modern design and continues to this day to inspire creatives, businesses and collectors around the world. Ettore Sottsass (1917-2007) Designer, architect and visionary thinker, Ettore Sottsass is a pivotal figure in twentieth-century design. Born in Innsbruck and raised in Italy, he has traversed several creative eras with his ironic and radical style, contributing to the evolution of industrial design, visual culture and architecture. His long collaboration with Olivetti resulted in iconic products such as the Valentine, and his signature can be recognized in his use of strong colors, primary forms and a deeply personal design language. In 1981 he founded the Memphis collective, revolutionizing the canons of design with a free, postmodern and provocative aesthetic. Olivetti Founded in 1908 in Ivrea by Camillo Olivetti, the company was a pioneer in the fields of mechanics, electronics and information technology. With Adriano Olivetti, the enterprise became a unique model of a humanist company, capable of integrating technological innovation, social responsibility and aesthetic avant-garde. In addition to being a leading manufacturer of typewriters, calculators and computers, Olivetti was the first Italian company to conceive design as a central element of industrial strategy. His commitment to promoting art, architecture and culture has left an indelible mark on the history of Made in Italy.
