Large Émile Gallé Art Nouveau Cameo Vase, Iris And Lily Pond, France, ca. 1906

About the Item

Slender baluster-shaped vase body on a separate base, widening conically towards the top and then narrowing again to form a slender neck with a flared mouth rim, colorless glass with yellow-orange color powder inclusions in the upper area, overlays in blue and black, in various stages highly etched decoration with iris and a water lily pond landscape, etched matt on the inside and background on the outside, relief polished. Cameo signature 'Gallé' on the wall in the lower area between the water lilies. Hand-made Cameo Glass: Glass overlaid with several layers, with high-cut worked out motifs. Since the middle of the 19th century, the design has also been done by etching. Cameo glass vessels were already being made in antiquity; at the end of the 19th century, Émile Gallé further developed this glass art, created Art Nouveau designs and employed a large factory in Nancy.
