Already in the 3rd generation, this goldsmith technique is successfully practiced professionally in the family.
For 16 years, the artist now lives in Germany and has his own studio.
It is historically traditional wedding and costume jewelry objects from Bavaria and Austria in the finest handmade but also small objects in silver such as horses, ships, trays and a unique object like this motorcycle.
Each piece is unique and will not be 100% identical to the previous one when manufactured again.
The term filigree literally means "grained wire" (from Latin filum "thread, wire" and granum "grain") and refers to fine goldsmith's work made of metal threads with attached metal beads. Figuratively, the term is also used for any other fine decorative form, such as that of an iron cutter or chaser.
It is an ancient ornamental wire bending technique made of delicate, thin wires braided (corded) as if into ropes. It is known since about 2000 BC from Troy. However, the Etruscans also developed this goldsmithing technique to perfection in the 8th century BC. Via Spain and Portugal, filigree work reached Friesland and spread from there to the Netherlands and northwest Germany. Today, filigree work continues to be used especially in the Alpine countries, but also in the Oriental countries for costume or folk jewelry.
Wires of gold or silver are soldered in decorative patterns onto a base of the same material. From the 20th century, the wires are also braided into a fine, openwork web without a base and soldered only at the points of contact. The material thickness of the wires is up to 0.01 mm. Valentine Schlegel was a French sculptor and ceramist born on 23 November 1925 in Sète and died on 16 May 2021 in Paris. She is best known for her series of vases created during the 1950s and for the plaster fireplaces she sculpted to order for private homes.
In 1945, she moved to Paris and discovered ceramics and sculpture with Frédérique Bourguet, a friend from the Beaux-Arts in Montpellier, with whom she shared a studio on rue Vavin until 1951. "Abundance" was produced in Circa 2008. This magnificent design was produced in a limited edition of 99, this being number 47. The foot has the etched trademark signature with the copyright symbol: Lalique France. The piece is both clear and frosted silky crystal with a wide shallow footed bowl molded with a flower on the interior and fruit and foliage molded on the baluster. This is a unique and extraordinary Art Nouveau design. It measures 15.125'' H x 15'' Dia.
René Lalique’s name is synonymous with French Art Nouveau decorative arts. Born in 1860 he first began designing fine jewelry in Paris in 1881, but pursuing increasingly more innovative experimentation in glass commencing around 1883, he eventually created crystal pieces. Early works used the familiar "lost wax" technique by which the model is made in wax while a mold is formed around the model. Then, the wax is melted and molten glass is poured into the mold. Lalique glass was made in this manner until approximately 1905 at which time the factory was redesigned for a larger production.
Without the hand-formed pieces and unique molds, the individual uniqueness of each example of Lalique glass came to an end.
