Unusual Vintage Melon Shaped Glazed Art Pottery Jug
About the Item
A stunning quality vintage melon shaped streak glazed art pottery jug, possibly Scandinavian and believed to date from the mid-century or earlier. The stoneware jug stands on a narrow round unglazed foot the body of round bulbous shape and formed as a melon with vertical ridges gathering in the centre at the top from which the stalk extends in a loop and rests on the body forming the handle. A large raised open pouring spout is applied to one side and the jug is decorated in matt and satin streaked glazes in tones of brown, green and blue. The jug does have an unusual painted maker’s mark to the base formed as a running pig over painted with initials LS.
Provenance: from the private collection of a gentleman and acquired from the UK art market.
In very good condition with light wear associated with age and use.
