Art Deco More Lighting

ART DECO STYLE

Art Deco furniture is characterized by its celebration of modern life. More than its emphasis on natural wood grains and focus on traditional craftsmanship, vintage Art Deco dining chairs, tables, desks, cabinets and other furniture — which typically refers to pieces produced during the 1920s and 1930s — is an ode to the glamour of the “Roaring Twenties.”

ORIGINS OF ART DECO FURNITURE DESIGN

CHARACTERISTICS OF ART DECO FURNITURE DESIGN

  • Bold geometric lines and forms, floral motifs
  • Use of expensive materials such as shagreen or marble as well as exotic woods such as mahogany, ebony and zebra wood
  • Metal accents, shimmering mirrored finishes
  • Embellishments made from exotic animal hides, inlays of mother-of-pearl or ivory

ART DECO FURNITURE DESIGNERS TO KNOW

VINTAGE ART DECO FURNITURE ON 1STDIBS

Few design styles are as universally recognized and appreciated as Art Deco. The term alone conjures visions of the Roaring Twenties, Machine Age metropolises, vast ocean liners, sleek typography and Prohibition-era hedonism. The iconic movement made an indelible mark on all fields of design throughout the 1920s and ’30s, celebrating society’s growing industrialization with refined elegance and stunning craftsmanship.

Widely known designers associated with the Art Deco style include Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann, Eileen Gray, Maurice Dufrêne, Paul Follot and Jules Leleu.

The term Art Deco derives from the name of a large decorative arts exhibition held in Paris in 1925. “Art Deco design” is often used broadly, to describe the work of creators in associated or ancillary styles. This is particularly true of American Art Deco, which is also called Streamline Moderne or Machine Age design. (Streamline Moderne, sometimes known as Art Moderne, was a phenomenon largely of the 1930s, post–Art Nouveau.)

Art Deco textile designers employed dazzling floral motifs and vivid colors, and while Art Deco furniture makers respected the dark woods and modern metals with which they worked, they frequently incorporated decorative embellishments such as exotic animal hides as well as veneers in their seating, case pieces, living room sets and bedroom furniture.

From mother-of-pearl inlaid vitrines to chrome aviator chairs, bold and inventive works in the Art Deco style include chaise longues (also known as chaise lounges) and curved armchairs. Today, the style is still favored by interior designers looking to infuse a home with an air of luxury and sophistication.

The vintage Art Deco furniture for sale on 1stDibs includes dressers, coffee tables, decorative objects and more.

Mint Pair of Timeless & Good Size White Alabaster Wall Sconces w/ Stunning Veins
Located in Lisse, NL
Stunning, timeless and easy to mount pair of alabaster wall sconces. We have sold beautiful alabaster wall sconces to both interior designers and private buyers before, but this pair is truly unique in their design, larger than average and their mint condition does not hurt either. This pair of natural mineral stone sconces is wider than average and what makes them extra stylish is their flat and therefor 'sleek design'. These Art Deco style sconces are pure white in color and, as you can see in our photos, they come with an abundance of natural veins, creating patterns that only Mother Nature is capable of creating. These lights will never fail to impress you (or anyone visiting). Thanks to their mint condition too, these handcrafted and fabulous sconces...

Located in Lisse, NL
Beautifully hand carved and mint condition antique alabaster shade pendant for wine lovers. This unique pendant from the earliest years of the 1900s comes with a wonderful grapevine design around the upper rim. The pattern with many leafs and grape bunches is marvelously hand-carved all around and what makes this pendant extra special is the most upper 'lining'. As you can see it is not straight, it goes up and down and what you see is actually the flowing lines of the grapevines as they twirl around the most upper edge of this one of a kind antique. Fountain Style Murano Glass Chandelier by Barovier
Located in Saint-Ouen, IDF
Stunning vintage chandelier from the 1930s in Murano glass and brass settings, by Barovier. Several handmade delicate parts compose this amazing piece, ribbed hand opened clear etched glass canopy and bowls, fluted vertical tube to decorate the stem, torciglione glass bursting out of the upper bowl to imitate the water flowing out of the fountain and sixteen leaves, also imitating the water movement. Barovier & Toso The name Barovier & Toso refers to one of the oldest Italian houses specialized in Murano glass objects. The house was founded in 1295 and still producing Murano glass objects to this day. The surname may not sound Italian. And for good reason, it comes from Berry, like those men-at-arms thanked by land for having well defended the lord of Castelfranco Veneto, a locality near Venice. The Baroviers embarked on the exploitation of glass and settled in the 14th century on the island of Murano, where the doges confined the ovens to protect the neighbor city of Venice, whose dwellings were at the time built of wood. During the Renaissance, Angelo Barovier assumed important responsibilities within the community of Murano and built a good part of the development of the local glass activity, in addition to the introduction of so-called "crystalline" glass and the “murrine” technique developed by his daughter, Marietta. At the end of the 19th century, the house became known as “Fratelli Barovier”, during this new era, the two brothers, Benvenuto and Giuseppe Barovier introduced the fabrication of the “murrini fusi” glass. The house became “Barovier & Toso” when in 1942 it merged with the Toso family of glass...
