Art Deco More Lighting

ART DECO STYLE

Art Deco furniture is characterized by its celebration of modern life. More than its emphasis on natural wood grains and focus on traditional craftsmanship, vintage Art Deco dining chairs, tables, desks, cabinets and other furniture — which typically refers to pieces produced during the 1920s and 1930s — is an ode to the glamour of the “Roaring Twenties.”

ORIGINS OF ART DECO FURNITURE DESIGN

CHARACTERISTICS OF ART DECO FURNITURE DESIGN

  • Bold geometric lines and forms, floral motifs
  • Use of expensive materials such as shagreen or marble as well as exotic woods such as mahogany, ebony and zebra wood
  • Metal accents, shimmering mirrored finishes
  • Embellishments made from exotic animal hides, inlays of mother-of-pearl or ivory

ART DECO FURNITURE DESIGNERS TO KNOW

VINTAGE ART DECO FURNITURE ON 1STDIBS

Few design styles are as universally recognized and appreciated as Art Deco. The term alone conjures visions of the Roaring Twenties, Machine Age metropolises, vast ocean liners, sleek typography and Prohibition-era hedonism. The iconic movement made an indelible mark on all fields of design throughout the 1920s and ’30s, celebrating society’s growing industrialization with refined elegance and stunning craftsmanship.

Widely known designers associated with the Art Deco style include Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann, Eileen Gray, Maurice Dufrêne, Paul Follot and Jules Leleu.

The term Art Deco derives from the name of a large decorative arts exhibition held in Paris in 1925. “Art Deco design” is often used broadly, to describe the work of creators in associated or ancillary styles. This is particularly true of American Art Deco, which is also called Streamline Moderne or Machine Age design. (Streamline Moderne, sometimes known as Art Moderne, was a phenomenon largely of the 1930s, post–Art Nouveau.)

Art Deco textile designers employed dazzling floral motifs and vivid colors, and while Art Deco furniture makers respected the dark woods and modern metals with which they worked, they frequently incorporated decorative embellishments such as exotic animal hides as well as veneers in their seating, case pieces, living room sets and bedroom furniture.

From mother-of-pearl inlaid vitrines to chrome aviator chairs, bold and inventive works in the Art Deco style include chaise longues (also known as chaise lounges) and curved armchairs. Today, the style is still favored by interior designers looking to infuse a home with an air of luxury and sophistication.

The vintage Art Deco furniture for sale on 1stDibs includes dressers, coffee tables, decorative objects and more.

Rectangular Billiard Style Glass Rod and Nickel Chandelier, P. Fargette, 1940
By P. Fargette
Located in New York City, NY
This unique rectangular shaped modernist chandelier, circa 1940, is attributed to P. Fargette. A French chandelier of billiard style and Industrial Design with an elongated demilune edge profile, stepped flat frosted bottom glass and sides formed of stacked glass rods which give a ridged appearance. Twin rods lower the chandelier from a protracted demilune shaped nickel-plated bronze canopy which invokes the shape of the chandelier. The chandelier is accented on either end by an eight pointed star, a favorite design motif prominent in the 1940s. Pyrex glass rods as seen on the sides of the chandelier were first used in this way in 1944 by Frank Lloyd Wright in his controversial Johnson Wax Building...

Pair of French Maison Baguès Foliage Crystal Three Arm Wall Sconces, Circa 1890
Located in Charleston, SC
Pair of French Maison Baguès three-arm crystal wall sconces with upper and central floral medallions, bead work, leaf foliage and crystal cup bobeches. Sconces were originally candle powered and have been electrified, Late 19th Century. Since its establishment in 1860, the Maison Baguès has been an emblem of French sophistication in luxury lighting design. Each piece the firm makes is hand assembled using traditional techniques, in order to emphasize the elegance and excellence of their detailed artisanal work. Still the epitome of savoir-faire, Maison Baguès’ luxurious pieces are prized for their craftsmanship, beauty and harmony. The master metal smith Noël Baguès founded the company as specialists in liturgical bronzes, but by 1880 the company had expanded into the production of bronze light fixtures in response to the development of electrical lighting. Carried on by Noël’s son Eugène and grandsons Victor and Robert, Maison Baguès continued to progress, adding intricately detailed iron lighting collections in the 1920s as well as stair banisters...

Large Opalescent, Frosted Art Glass, Six-Arm Chandelier Signed Ezan
By Ezan
Located in New York City, NY
A very special opalescent, molded art glass chandelier with all glass stem and canopy signed Ezan, circa 1935. The armature is completely encased so that undulating glass forms with dotted block patterns convey an organic impression. A minimum of exposed mounting clips in silver plate bronze creates an even further, all glass illusion. The opalescent nature of the glass gives the hint of slight color. It is a chameleon to match any neighboring decor and can appear to have slightly shaded tints of blue, or pink, or yellow, or purple depending on sunlight and surrounding. Unfortunately the photos do not replicate the true nature, color and feeling of the luminous art...

This piece is given the" rarity rating" of 1; the rarest of Pairpoint production. Purchase includes a copy of Malakoff text. The company was founded by Deming Jarves in 1837 in South Boston, Massachusetts, as the Mount Washington Glass Works. In 1870, Mount Washington relocated to New Bedford, Massachusetts. In the 1880s, the company primarily produced art glass. In 1885, it introduced Burmese art glass, a translucent, heat reactive glass that shades from yellow at the bottom to pink at the top. The company became known for this type of glass, obtaining a British patent for it in 1886, and presenting a number of Burmese pieces to Queen Victoria. In 1880, British silver designer Thomas Pairpoint (1838-1902) resigned his position as head designer at the Meriden Brittania Company and founded the Pairpoint Manufacturing Company...
