Vintage Large Scale Ceramic Kifwebe-Inspired Mask Lamp on Mahogany Base, 1950s
Located in Long Island City, NY
Vintage Large Scale Ceramic Kifwebe-Inspired Mask Lamp on Mahogany Base, Circa 1950s. A gorgeous interpretation of a Congolese Kifwebe mask rendered in off-white stoneware with incised surface detailing in shades of tan and brown. Mounted on a solid mahogany base. We believe this piece to have inspired by an actual carved wood Kifwebe mask in the collection of the MET. Possibly produced by Heifetz, but likely a one-of-a-kind off piece. SOLD WITHOUT LAMPSHADE. “The striations on both male and female masks, which are a unique stylistic trait of all Songye masks, are derived from the markings and patterns of wild and dangerous animals, such as the zebra or striped antelope, crocodile, lion, porcupine, and snake. Bifwebe (Male masks) may be painted black, white, and red. The colors of black and white, however, refer to gender. Female masks are predominantly white, if they are painted at all.” - Dallas Museum of Art “Kifwebe masks played a central role in Songye society enacting control over the social order, and participating in crucial activities such as initiations. This face mask only formed part of a costume ensemble that also included a hood, shirt, and pants made of woven bark, completed by diverse implements in animal skins, furs, and feathers. Like most masks in Western collections, this example was separated from the rest of the costume following its collection from Africa. Once removed from its original context, it no longer formed part of a kinetic and multisensory environment but was admired as a static object of strong graphic qualities, particularly its contrasting white and black striations, stylized features, and overall sense of balance.” - Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York Condition: Excellent vintage condition. One tiny chip on the forehead ridge (barely noticeable and as detailed in photos...

Art Nouveau Ceramics Table Lamp Hand Decorated with Parrots, Denmark, 1930s
Located in Odense, DK
Ceramics table lamp made at "L. Hjort", Denmark in the 1930s. The base is made from stoneware and hand decorated with fruit branches and parrots motif in Art Nouveau style. Original socket mount in patinated brass. Mounted with white flax linen shade. Marked by maker underneath. In the 1850s at the island of Bornholm in Denmark the small terracotta factory "L. Hjort" specialized in producing terracotta earthenware items. The factory had great success internationally, and already by 1880 Hjorth's articles were sold in the big department stores of Paris, London and Berlin, and as far away as in Australia, New York and Sct. Thomas. The factory also participated in the big World Exhibitions in Altona 1869, London 1870 and 1874 as well as New Orleans 1885. One of Hjorths Fabrik's biggest successes and Denmark's first real stoneware series is the grey-brown stoneware. It is available as vases, jars, dishes, stands, tea and coffee sets, lamps, buttons, brooches, door signs...
