Early Isamu Noguchi Akari Light Sculpture, Model 3X with Original Packaging

About the Item

This vintage Akari Light Sculpture designed by Isamu Noguchi is an icon of 1950s modern design: a harmonious blend of Japanese handcraft and modernist form. Stamped ‘Sun and Moon’ ideogram to shade. Sold with original packaging. About the Design Noguchi began to design the Akari light sculptures in 1951 after his visit to Gifu, a town known for its manufacturing of paper parasols and lanterns from mulberry bark and bamboo. He chose the name 'akari' for these sculptures which means both illumination and lightness in Japanese. The lanterns are collapsible, a traditional feature Noguchi insisted in keeping. Each light sculpture is crafter by hand in the Ozeki workshop, a traditional family-run company based in Gifu. The symbol located on the edge of the luminaire guarantees authenticity of each product.
