Modern Table Lamps

MODERN STYLE

The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw sweeping social change and major scientific advances — both of which contributed to a new aesthetic: modernism. Rejecting the rigidity of Victorian artistic conventions, modernists sought a new means of expression. References to the natural world and ornate classical embellishments gave way to the sleek simplicity of the Machine Age. Architect Philip Johnson characterized the hallmarks of modernism as “machine-like simplicity, smoothness or surface [and] avoidance of ornament.”

Early practitioners of modernist design include the De Stijl (“The Style”) group, founded in the Netherlands in 1917, and the Bauhaus School, founded two years later in Germany.

Followers of both groups produced sleek, spare designs — many of which became icons of daily life in the 20th century. The modernists rejected both natural and historical references and relied primarily on industrial materials such as metal, glass, plywood, and, later, plastics. While Bauhaus principals Marcel Breuer and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe created furniture from mass-produced, chrome-plated steel, American visionaries like Charles and Ray Eames worked in materials as novel as molded plywood and fiberglass. Today, Breuer’s Wassily chair, Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona chaircrafted with his romantic partner, designer Lilly Reich — and the Eames lounge chair are emblems of progressive design and vintage originals are prized cornerstones of collections.

It’s difficult to overstate the influence that modernism continues to wield over designers and architects — and equally difficult to overstate how revolutionary it was when it first appeared a century ago. But because modernist furniture designs are so simple, they can blend in seamlessly with just about any type of décor. Don’t overlook them.

Gio Ponti Bilia Lamp for Fontana Arte, Italy 1970s
Located in London, GB
Gio Ponti (1881-1979) was a Milanese architect, industrial and furniture designer, artist and publisher. He was a pivotal figure in the Italian design and manufacturing industry founding Il Labirinto with Lancia, Buzzi, Marelli, Venini and Chiesa in order to produce high-quality furniture and objects. He also founded Domus magazine which helped contextualise and promote the work of Italian designers and manufacturers around the world. Throughout his career he designed many icons but is perhaps most known for the symbol of modern Milan, the Pirelli skyscraper, in 1956. His furniture has always drawn deeply from Italian traditions and given them a modern edge. This gorgeous lamp is a great example of that. "Kanji" Blown Glass Wide Table Lamp Designed by Denis Guidone for Fontana Arte
Located in Brooklyn, NY
"Kanji" is a wide table lamp, designed by Denis Guidone and manufactured by Fontana Arte, made in blown glass with two finishes, transparent smoky gray and frosted white, and structure and handle in black painted metal. It's provided with a dimmer and lighting source is 10W LED (2700K, CRI>80, Lumen 1000). Dimensions: Ø 16.8", H 15.3" "Kanji" is a collection of lighting elements that reinterprets traditional oriental portable lanterns in a contemporary vision. Available in tabletop and ceiling models, it draws inspiration from Chinese porcelain dating from the Ming dynasty. The handblown glass diffuser, in frosted white and translucent smoky gray, is adorned with a pleated surface decoration. A LED ring runs inside the structure and magically illuminates the diffuser. Evocative of Far East not only as form but also as a name, as "Kanji" are characters of Chinese origin used in Japanese writing in conjunction with the Hiragana and Katakana syllabaries, "Kanji" is designed to be used alone or in pairs, with each form amplifying the aesthetic power of the other. Denis Guidone studied architecture at the Politecnico di Milano and at FAUP in Oporto. He won numerous international awards, including the IDA Design Award in Los Angeles. He was also given the Bruno Munari Prize by Gillo Dorfles...

"Giova" Table Lamp + Flower Pot Designed by Gae Aulenti for FontanaArte
Located in Brooklyn, NY
"Giova" is a refined table lamp and flower pot hybrid piece of design, designed by Gae Aulenti and manufactured by FontanaArte, featuring a chromed metal base, a middle globe in transparent blown glass, an inner globe in polished white opaline glass, an upper half-sphere in pink blown glass with decorative bubbles, black power cable, plug and switch. Its lighting source is 1 x 100W 230V E27 (HA, FL, LED). DIMENSIONS: Ø 19.7", H. 23.2" "Giova" marks the debut of Gae Aulenti in the field of lighting design. Available in two sizes, it is both a lamp and a luminous sculpture. Placed on a metal base, a transparent bowl containing a sphere of white opal glass, which in turn houses the light source. Placed above there's a smaller bowl in blown "pulegoso" glass, meaning "with irregular bubbles", which serves as a flower vase. Now also available with gray "pulegoso" glass and a gold finished base. GAE AULENTI graduated from Milan Polytechnic in 1953 and since 1956 has been working there designing for architecture, interior and industrial design and theatre scenery.
