About

Ultrafragola mirror (from Mobile Grigi series of designs.) Ettore Sottsass (Italian.) Original design: 1970, production 2019 Opaline plastic, mirror, pink LED light within, nickel-plated brass. (Neon pink lighting source only on request, as authorized by the Sottsass Estate.) (Ultrafragola translates to "The Ultimate Strawberry", a reference to the women who would view themselves within it. Show-stopper with its sensual wavy form!) Both in its name and in its sinuous shape, this evocative and erotic 'vanities' is an homage to women's sensuality by Ettore Sottsass. It was realized in materials that were unashamedly new: wavy vacuum-formed acrylic sheet and colored neon light opposed to the more traditional mirror made from gilded, carved wood. For Sottsass, "Life is perceived by the senses before the intellect and sexuality belongs to that sensorial vocabulary". Each mirror is hand-assembled in Italy upon order as a continuing production with all original materials. There exists 7-8 week production period + 3-4 weeks shipping. *** Dear Interested Clients: *** There are a number of offerings of the ULTRAFRAGOLA mirror on the 1stDibs site & the internet, most from European dealers (official & unofficial dealers). Urban Architecture Inc. is the ONLY USA Official Dealer/Distributor, and we are NYC-based, with a true “brick & mortar” location (we are not just an internet “gallery” working out of an obscure location). We offer a 1-year warranty on this mirror that covers workmanship & the replacement of moveable parts (interior light sources, transformers, exterior floor switches, etc) at our cost & expense. This is because we maintain an inventory onsite at our Brooklyn warehouse of all such pertinent parts & materials. No European “dealer” can possibly offer such services as they are not US-based. Lastly, if the ULTRAFRAGOLA mirror arrives from Italy either cracked, damaged or non-functional for whatever reason, we replace it in advance of your delivery with no question. That is why all mirrors are first delivered to our facilities before we ship on to you — in that way, we have the opportunity to open the traveling crate, inspect & test the product, illuminate it & then photo-document it for your protection. We don’t just sell you a mirror. We want to provide you with safeguards that protect your investment. After all, this is a Sottsass masterwork, destined to become one of your family heirlooms. Thank you. Keith Johnson

About the Designer

Ettore Sottsass

An architect, industrial designer, philosopher and provocateur, Ettore Sottsass led a revolution in the aesthetics and technology of modern design in the late 20th century.

Sottsass was the oldest member of the Memphis Group — a design collective, formed in Milan in 1980, whose irreverent, spirited members included Alessandro Mendini, Michele de Lucchi, Michael Graves and Shiro Kuramata. All had grown disillusioned by the staid, black-and-brown “corporatized” modernism that had become endemic in the 1970s. Memphis (the name stemmed from the title of a Bob Dylan song) countered with bold, brash, colorful, yet quirkily minimal designs for furniture, glassware, ceramics and metalwork. They mocked high-status by building furniture with inexpensive materials such as plastic laminates, decorated to resemble exotic finishes such as animal skins. Their work was both functional and — as intended — shocking. Even as it preceded the Memphis Group's formal launch, Sottsass's iconic Ultrafragola mirror — in its conspicuously curved plastic shell and radical pops of pink neon — embodies many of the collective's postmodern ideals.

Sottsass's most-recognized designs appeared in the first Memphis collection, issued in 1981 — notably the multihued, angular Carlton room divider and Casablanca bookcase. As pieces on 1stDibs demonstrate, however, Sottsass is at his most imaginative and expressive in smaller, secondary furnishings such as lamps and chandeliers, and in table pieces and glassware that have playful and sculptural qualities.

It was as an artist that Ettore Sottsass was celebrated in his life, in exhibitions at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, in 2006, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art a year later. Even then Sottsass’s work prompted critical debate. And for a man whose greatest pleasure was in astonishing, delighting and ruffling feathers, perhaps there was no greater accolade. That the work remains so revolutionary and bold — that it breaks with convention so sharply it will never be considered mainstream — is a testament to his genius.
