Antique 19th century large oval gold and silver leaf gilt French mirror
About the Item
On offer here is a large antique oval mirror that was made in France in the second half of the 19th century, circa 1860. The mirror is decorated with beautiful ornaments with rich symbolic meaning.
The top ornament on the mirror features a centrally positioned escutcheon, flanked by a ribbon and enriched with a laurel garland. The laurel garland symbolizes triumph and honor, while the ribbon symbolizes unity and continuity. The lower ornament features a centrally positioned bow-tied ribbon flanked by oak leaves and acorns. These oak branches are also placed in the center of the frame and at the top. The oak symbolizes strength, endurance, and wisdom. A classic pearl beading surrounds the glass. The most elevated parts of the frame were gilt with gold leaf, with the gold showing signs of significant weathering, revealing the underlying red bolus layer. The rest of the mirror frame has a natural bone color. The ornaments are gilded with silver leaf and have been partially polished and patinated. The mirror is fitted with the original silver nitrate silvered mirror plate with a facetted edge. The mirror plate shows a few small scratches and spots but is in very good condition given its age.
The overall condition of the mirror is good. The gilding is in reasonable condition but shows significant wear. The bone-colored sections were originally painted with gold paint, and the silver leaf gilded parts were patinated with yellow patina to achieve a pale gold color. The weathered appearance of the gilding gives the mirror a more natural look. The glass was carefully removed from the frame in our workshop and the entire piece was gently cleaned. The glass was securely reinserted and the authentic backing was reaffixed. The mirror is without damage, clean, and ready for use.
