Modern Wall Mirrors

MODERN STYLE

The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw sweeping social change and major scientific advances — both of which contributed to a new aesthetic: modernism. Rejecting the rigidity of Victorian artistic conventions, modernists sought a new means of expression. References to the natural world and ornate classical embellishments gave way to the sleek simplicity of the Machine Age. Architect Philip Johnson characterized the hallmarks of modernism as “machine-like simplicity, smoothness or surface [and] avoidance of ornament.”

Early practitioners of modernist design include the De Stijl (“The Style”) group, founded in the Netherlands in 1917, and the Bauhaus School, founded two years later in Germany.

Followers of both groups produced sleek, spare designs — many of which became icons of daily life in the 20th century. The modernists rejected both natural and historical references and relied primarily on industrial materials such as metal, glass, plywood, and, later, plastics. While Bauhaus principals Marcel Breuer and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe created furniture from mass-produced, chrome-plated steel, American visionaries like Charles and Ray Eames worked in materials as novel as molded plywood and fiberglass. Today, Breuer’s Wassily chair, Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona chaircrafted with his romantic partner, designer Lilly Reich — and the Eames lounge chair are emblems of progressive design and vintage originals are prized cornerstones of collections.

It’s difficult to overstate the influence that modernism continues to wield over designers and architects — and equally difficult to overstate how revolutionary it was when it first appeared a century ago. But because modernist furniture designs are so simple, they can blend in seamlessly with just about any type of décor. Don’t overlook them.

20th Century James Irvine Wall Mirror Belvedere for Danese Italy Shaped
Located in Turin, Turin
Belvedere Danese reproduces the shape of Italy in large dimensions: a familiar shape that thus becomes unprecedented and, in addition to optically enlarging the space, lends a touch of irony to the environment in which one lives. The author of this wall mirror, James Irvine, about this project said: "If you flip through an atlas, one of those pastel-colored ones, you immediately see the shape of each country. Some are beautiful, some are ugly. Some are interesting, some are boring. Italy has the good fortune to be truly the Bel Paese...

The Seeing Glass project involved different collections - one of them being the Off Round mirrors. Bigger Brothers Round Wall Mirror with Solid Beech Wood Peg by by Paolo Cappello
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Les brother is a rather particular family of mirrors made up of seven brothers, two large, two intermediate and three small. If the two large ones amplify and extend the spaces, the small ones give sweetness to the environment, while the medium ones seek the dialogue between the two functions. They share a small mole in the upper part, a wooden detail that becomes the support on the wall. Mirrors of big dimensions, hanging on the wall with a solid beech wood peg...

Located in Brooklyn, NY
Syro Mirror echoes the organic silhouettes of the entire Syro collection, translating them into mirrored surfaces that, surrounded by thick iron and brass frames, mimic the natural outlines of petals. In a mix of chromatic effects obtained from various metal treatments, these multifaceted shapes can be arranged as desired, on their own or one next to another. The organic nature of the collection is thus amplified, revealing the multiple ways they can be combined on the wall, to surprisingly dramatic results.
