We had heard of the existence of sets like this, but we had never seen one anywhere. To have found one from the Arts & Crafts era and in this amazing condition more than made our day. Including the altar cards (of which we are not sure if they are original to this set) and including the spoons we have counted 24 pieces in total. We learned that these sets functioned as a training tool for altar boys and this particular set has been extremely well taken care after. The wear on the holy water sprinkler with its ebonized wooden handle shows us that this set has been used more than what the excellent condition brass pieces would lead you to believe. A magnificent rustic Spanish Colonial antique, circa 1725, church altar with remarkable patina and detailing.
Hand-crafted in the first half of the 18th century, most likely commissioned by the Spanish Empire for use in a Colonial religious Mission, now fashioned with later antique elements and repurposed for use as a sideboard.
The scarce Baroque period ecclesiastical architectural church altar presents with a raised gallery shelf back topped with a single board, over a massive, thick pine plank wooden slab top, featuring impressive rich patina, rustic charm and antique character. Mounted over the distinctive architectural trapezoid shaped molded base with rich hand carved and polychrome painted decoration, including the sophisticated original Italian / European inspired trompe-l'œil marbleizing finish, which was a variety of faux painting techniques used only by highly skilled artisans to create the distinctive and varied patterns of marble, in an effort to reproduce the colors, veining and luster of real marble or other building materials. Rising on solid supports enhanced with recessed paneling, smooth rounded corners and edge work and stepped molded trim.
Beautiful, nicely aged patina over the whole, highly desirable heavily worn, naturally distressed, chippy paint craquelure finish that has been stabilized to minimize further loss, that does not detect from the aesthetics or functionality, but only adds to the overall elegant warmth and rich historical depth, that can only be acquired over three centuries. Very strong, sturdy, stable. Delivered cleaned, hand waxed, luminous polished French patina finish, ready for immediate use, and many more years of generational enjoyment.

A stunning Italian gilt copper ewer dating back to 18th century with a circular body featuring a quadripartite decoration defined by the repoussé of a double vertical ribbed frame that frames tableaux decorated with floral scrolls; the background of these sections is finely dotted by chisel tool to underline a very pleasant relief to the embossed parts thanks to the burnishing.
An excellent and unique hand-made pitcher, selected in a private collection of Northern Italy.
This rare golden jug was created to serve wine during the Eucharistic celebration, the Christian liturgical practice. it is an Italian work of art that dates back to 1700, with a wonderful fire gilding, for collectors. In good age related condition regardless of a small dent in the middle part of the body, consistent with the eighteenth-century dating.
The cast handle takes up the motif of the volutes present on the body of the ewer. The spout is closed by a hinged lid with a small floral knob, with minimal deformations near the hinge compromising its perfect closure.

This incredibly well carved bust of Jesus is impressive both for its quality and its large size. With His head bowed down like in His final hours on the cross this design is obviously perfect for displaying on a tall stand. In this case a tall and ebonized wooden pedestal was used and thanks to the contrasting colors of this bust and its pedestal they are like a match made in heaven. The master sculptor / artist could not have done a better job in hand carving the exhausted yet serene facial expression of Christ. The large size of this bust combined with the rare sandstone material makes this work of religious art look extra ancient. Because of its size this archetype of Christianity can also be seen and worshipped from further away. Unfortunately we cannot read the name of the skilled artisan who signed this unique sculpture. Thanks to its amazing quality, its excellent condition, its deeper meaning and its powerful presence this work of religious art will never fail to impress, no matter where you decide to have it on display. Frank Brangwyn. An important armchair.
Brangwyn's last interior designs were for the Canadian Pacific Liner; 'The SS Empress of Britain', which was launched in 1931 by the Prince of Wales, later to be King Edward VIII who renounced his throne to marry Wallis Simpson in 1930.
These armchairs were designed for the 1st class dining room; 'The Salle Jacque Cartier' (see last image) and they were made by H.H. Martyn and Co. Cheltenham. The 1st class dining room was described in the Bulletin of The Decorative Arts Society 1890-1940 as 'In the fully fledge modern restaurant and cinema style of the 1930s'. The Studio in a long article on the liner, discusses and illustrates Brangwyn's Salle Jacques Cartier: 'So architectural it is, so true proportion, so devoid of Extraneous ornament. In contrast to this austerity of line, hue and colour, his great wall paintings are rich in colour; composed in the bold, yet intricate pattern of figure, fruit and flowers that characterizes Mr Brangwyn's decorative works'.
Tragically the liner was sunk in 1940 by a U-boat. Brangwyn also designed marquetry panels for the private dining rooms and they were executed by the Rowley Gallery, he also designed a frieze carved in wood for their gallery façade in 1936.
The armchair has a central under bar below the seat which still has the original bolt and eye to secure the chain to and then to the floor, that would prevent all the chairs from sliding around in stormy weather.
It is lacking ivorene numbered disc which would have sat in the very top of the head rail.
In October 1940 the most famous of the Canadian Pacific Railway liners and flagship of the company's Atlantic Fleet, the Empress of Britain, was attacked and sunk. She was travelling to Glasgow from Suez via South Africa, where she was bombed near the north-west coast of Ireland by a German Focke Wulf Condor plane. When the Condor attacked the Empress of Britain the ship's crew couldn't shoot the plane down and soon the Empress was burning out of control and the Captain C.H. Sapsworth gave the order to abandon ship. 45 people died and the remaining survivors including women and children, were later rescued that day by the British destroyer HMS Echo and the Polish destroyer Burza and 3 British naval trawlers Paynter, Cape Agona and Drangey. The Empress still burning managed to stay afloat and the day after 2 Royal Navy tugs, Marauder and Thames tried to tow her into port with many escort ships around her but in spite of the protection she was given from the escort ships on October 28th, a German U-boat, U-32, managed to get by the escorts un-noticed and torpedoed the crippled Empress. She sank within ten minutes. The Empress of Britain was the largest Allied passenger liner to be sunk and weighing 42,348-tons she was the biggest merchant ship loss of the war. King George VI and Queen Elizabeth had travelled aboard Empress of Britain after their 1939 Royal Tour...

Caffè Florian is a historic café in the city of Venice, located under the arcades of the Procuratie Nuove in Piazza San Marco.
It is the oldest Italian coffee and the oldest coffee in the world. It was inaugurated on December 29, 1720 by Floriano Francesconi with the name of Alla Venezia Trionfante, but immediately the Venetians simply said “andemo da Florian-let's go to Florian”, from the name of the owner in the Venetian dialect. Since then it has continued its daily coffee business uninterruptedly to the present day, becoming a favorite destination for Venetians, Italians and foreigners. Floriano Francesconi inspired the character of Ridolfo in Carlo Goldoni's coffee shop.
