At the dawn of the twentieth century, the world yearned for a new design style that would embody contemporary culture. Efforts to create a design language suited to the needs and tastes of the modern world took shape during the first decades of the new century, crystallizing in Paris with the 1925 Exposition International des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes. The Art Deco period encompassed a multitude of decorative influences, including the updating of historical styles, the introduction of exotic elements and the adaptation of avant-garde art currents such as the geometric abstraction of Cubism.
Not a single style or a unified movement, Art Deco is a design idiom that reflects a decorative approach to designing appealing consumer goods during the interwar period. Encompassing every discipline within the applied arts, Art Deco manifested itself to some extent everywhere around the world, perhaps the first design idiom ever to do so. This is a lovely antique Swiss 10 airs Gonçalo Alves cylinder music box, manufactured by Langdorff & Fils, circa 1880.
The case is inlaid and crossbanded with floral marquetry and banded decoration. The lid opens to reveal an ebonised interior with a glazed hinged cover showing the comb, and a paper label to the underside of the lid stating 'Fabrique De Geneve' Langdorff & Fils, Fabricants
The music box has got its original tune sheet which is stamped:
"No 24017 Fabrique de Geneve" and lists the ten tunes and composers.

Relief made of carved and polychrome wood that shows an old man with a particular headdress (reminiscent of some chaperones) lying on a bed and accompanied by two friars dressed in habits, who talk to each other. Iconographically, the figure of the old man lying on the bed (note the cushion that raises the upper part of the body, following the common use of the time) who has not died (probably) because he was not completely lying down, is reminiscent of how he was usually represented, for example, to San Antón, San Jerónimo, etc. It is not very likely that it is the subject of the Transit or Death of Saint Francis of Assisi due to the absence of the Stigmata and due to age.
