A powerful and dramatic pair of Italian neoclassical carved and gilt wood mythical animal figures on faux painted bases, mid 19th century or earlier, Italy.
The fantastic beasts are well carved, with dramatic wings that follow the sensuous curve of the neck, and a sinuous body ends in an eel-like tail gracefully curled in upon itself. The bearded heads feature a flattened snout with sharp teeth and a lolling tongue, and pointed horse ears and mane. The long forelegs stretched out in front of them and ending in pawed and clawed feet.
The beasts have characteristics of several different mythical animals, making them hard to positively identify. The most likely candidates would be dragons, hippocampi, or chimeras.
The beasts are unfinished to the back, indicating they were originally part of a relief decoration, possibly from a mirror. They have now been mounted to wooden bases faux painted to imitate porphyry.
They would make perfect bookends or mantle sculptures.

Also using foodstuffs from coastal waters and forests, from seaweed and sea snakes to wild flowers and even soil, the recipes are presented and shown in stunning photographs by world-renowned Brazilian food photographer Sergio Coimbra. But this is more than a book of recipes, it is a new kind of gastronomy book that explores the background of where the ingredients are sourced and also how the chef works with the craftsmen who makes his knives and tableware. The Artist:
Yoshihiro Narisawa, born in Aichi prefecture in 1969 as the son of a baker of western recipes, moved to Europe at the age of 19 where he trained in France, Switzerland, and Italy, before returning to his homeland. Narisawa opened his first restaurant in Kanagawa in 1996, moving to Tokyo in 2003. After pursuing a connection with French cuisine, Narisawa went on to develop his “Satoyama” style. The Beautiful and the Damned was Fitzgerald’s second novel, following his debut This Side of Paradise. The book is an exploration of the nouveau riche, New York City nightlife in the 1920s, and the inner dynamics of two young and reckless newlyweds. Semi-autobigraphical, Fitzgerald modeled the characters of Anthony Patch and Gloria Gilbert on himself and his new spouse Zelda Fitzgerald and the story draws circumstantially upon the early years of Fitzgeralds' tempestuous marriage.
Fitzgerald started writing The Beautiful and the Damned in August of 1920, while in Westport Connecticut. Presented is a first edition printing of The Flag of the United States by Milo Milton Quaife. The book was published in New York by Grosset & Dunlap in 1942. It is presented here rebound in ¼ leather and cloth boards, with raised bands and gilt titles to the spine, and a matching archival slipcase.
Quaife wrote The Flag of the United States in order to present “the true and authentic history of the United States.” Wading through the myths and stories surrounding the flag, he details the origins and evolution of the American flag, using careful research to determine fact from fiction. There are several chapters on the early flags of Spain, France, and Holland in America and Quaife traces the development of the American flag from its English predecessor. He articulates the twenty-nine word resolution of the Second Continental Congress that made the flag of the United States, then outlines the changes to the flag’s design made in 1795, 1818, and 1912. He has a chapter on Civil War flags, a chapter on flags of the Army, and several debunking the many myths surrounding the American flag.
This book was very well received upon its publication. “Quaife is entitled to a good deal of praise for having written a straightforward, and very readable, history of our flag” (Ralph W. Steen, Southwestern Historical Quarterly, 1943). “To read this history of our flag is to read the history of these United States, not only in the years when we became an infant nation, but also in those later years variously devoted to territorial expansion, extending our commerce, and fighting other wars.” (Ardelia Olden Koch, Wisconsin Magazine of History, 1943).

Presented is the first edition, first printing of Joseph Heller’s Catch-22. Catch-22 was published by Simon and Schuster, in October of 1961. This book is presented in the original publisher’s blue cloth boards, titled and embossed in white, and the original, unclipped dust-jacket. The Simon and Schuster “A Note to the Reader” postcard is laid in. The book comes with a new, archival ¼ leather and cloth clamshell.
Catch-22 was Joseph Heller’s first novel and his most acclaimed work. Set during World War II, the novel uses a unique, non-chronological third-person narration, mainly focusing on the life of a B-25 bombardier in the U.S. Army, Captain John Yossarian, and his attempts to avoid bombing runs. Both the title and plot device, “Catch-22” refers to an Air Forces regulation which asserts that a man is considered insane if he willingly agrees to fly dangerous combat missions, but that if he makes the formal request to be relieved of such missions, the very act of making the request proves that he is sane and therefore ineligible to be relieved." By the end of the novel, the phrase is invoked as the explanation for many unreasonable restrictions. “Catch-22” has since entered the English lexicon.
Heller spent eight years writing "Catch-22," and used his own war experiences as inspiration for the novel. From 1942 to 1945, Heller served as a combat bombardier in the Twelfth Air Force and was stationed on the Island of Corsica. Upon publication, the book was not an immediate bestseller, but did elicit glowing reviews from some. “Wildly original, brilliantly comic, brutally gruesome, it is a dazzling performance that will probably outrage nearly as many readers as it delights. In any case, it is one of the most startling first novels of the year and it may make its author famous” (Orville Prescott, New York Times).
