About the Item

Price for a pair, 3 pairs available. Executed by Renzo Brugola Distributed by Blum Helman Gallery Collection Centre Georges Pompidou The Metropolitan Museum of Art collection In 1987, he designed the Miss, don’t you like caviar? chair for the I suppose you know what I’m talking about dining room suite. Each piece of this ensemble consists of a number of heterogeneous geometrical elements having a symbolic connotation. The honesty with which Sottsass designed and marketed this work to a luxury clientele could be seen as antithetical to modernism’s democratic ethos predicated on mass production. With the suite of furniture that includes this chair, there was no illusion of reaching ordinary consumers—the pieces are loft-scaled, exquisitely proportioned ensembles made of rare stones and exotic woods. Titles of other items in the series include What’s the Name of Your Swiss Bank Account? and We Went to Crete (That Raining Spring). Archive photo: Composite "I Suppose you know what I’m talking about" (1987) and "Miss, don't you like caviar ?" armchair (1987) into the Blum Helman Gallery.

One arm-rest shows a bit of slight deformation. Labelled Knoll at the bottom. Dimensions are H.30.7" x W.38.2 x D.29.52". Seating height is 14.17 cm. Provenance: derives from a Villa in Vienna. These will sell as a pair only and will ship crated and internationally. We do offer white glove service in NYC and LA. In 1983, two years after the founding of Memphis, Sottsass splintered off from his collective to partner with Knoll Studio, creating the Eastside and Westside collections. Inspired by his lifelong love of Viennese Biedermeier chairs, characterized by plush seats with clean lines and minimal adornment, the collection consisted of geometric sofas and lounge chairs in color-blocked upholsteries. In spite of his iconoclasm, Sottsass had a deep appreciation of ancient art and architecture—particularly Sumerian, Assyrian and Chinese—resulting in the decision to shoot the collection against the backdrop of the Great Pyramids of Giza.
