About the Item

This early edition of Finn Juhl's iconic 45 chair was made circa 1950 by Niels Vodder and has recently been restored as an investment piece. The rosewood frame has been disassembled and rejoined using hide glue, a glue that has enough give when heated to allow for future restoration when the time comes, say in year 2075, 50 years from today. We have taken great care to restore the frame to its original colour by sanding away (exfoliating) the faded wood cells without changing the form of the chair in any way. Perhaps 1mm on the surface was sanded away. Our restoration was the second restoration this chair has had. We can see from the remains of the Niels Vodder stamp that the first restoration in the 1980s (we assume based on the fabric and materials used) also involved sanding down, including the stamped label. Luckily, the Niels Vodder stamp is still clear to see. When choosing the material for upholstery, we wanted to reflect a timeless quality and selected a cashmere boucle. The 45 chair often had a seat pad of a contrasting colour, and so we offer two seat pads. The upholstery padding was not overdone but is amply comfortable. The boucle does well to hold you. You will see in the last image that the front right leg received a small impression when being reupholstered. It is not easily seen with the naked eye. This chair is sold with a CITES permit for sale in the UK. For export outside the UK, the permit can be used to obtain a re-export permit which will take 2-3 weeks.
