Brazilian Armchairs

BRAZILIAN FURNITURE

More often than not, vintage mid-century Brazilian furniture designs, with their gleaming wood, soft leathers and inviting shapes, share a sensuous, unique quality that distinguishes them from the more rectilinear output of American and Scandinavian makers of the same era.

Commencing in the 1940s and '50s, a group of architects and designers transformed the local cultural landscape in Brazil, merging the modernist vernacular popular in Europe and the United States with the South American country's traditional techniques and indigenous materials.

Key mid-century influencers on Brazilian furniture design include natives Oscar NiemeyerSergio Rodrigues and José Zanine Caldas as well as such European immigrants as Joaquim TenreiroJean Gillon and Jorge Zalszupin. These creators frequently collaborated; for instance, Niemeyer, an internationally acclaimed architect, commissioned many of them to furnish his residential and institutional buildings.

The popularity of Brazilian modern furniture has made household names of these designers and other greats. Their particular brand of modernism is characterized by an émigré point of view (some were Lithuanian, German, Polish, Ukrainian, Portuguese, and Italian), a preference for highly figured indigenous Brazilian woods, a reverence for nature as an inspiration and an atelier or small-production mentality.

Hallmarks of Brazilian mid-century design include smooth, sculptural forms and the use of native woods like rosewoodjacaranda and pequi. The work of designers today exhibits many of the same qualities, though with a marked interest in exploring new materials (witness the Campana Brothers' stuffed-animal chairs) and an emphasis on looking inward rather than to other countries for inspiration.

Brazilian Pair of Scissor Armchairs in Brazilian Hardwood
Located in Waalwijk, NL
Pair of scissor armchairs, Brazilian hardwood and fabric, Brazil, circa 1950 These exceptionally rare armchairs from Brazil embraces the quintessential Brazilian ethos of the 1950s. The design bears the beauty of Brazil's natural environment through its raw, constructive layout and the skillful use of a local, solid wooden material. The construction is marked by well-defined geometry, logical proportions, and visible constructivist elements. Characterized by simplicity, clarity and absence of ornamentation, this framework is exemplary of architectural minimalism. Upholstered in a delicate patterned fabric in green and white, it beautifully complements the wooden elements. The material use, woodworking, and the overall composition strongly resemblance the designs by Studio de Arte Palma, co-founded by Lina Bo Bardi, Pietro Maria Bardi, and Giancarlo Palanti...

Giuseppe Scapinelli Sculptural Armchair Reupholstered in White Bouclé, c 1960
By Giuseppe Scapinelli
Located in Los Angeles, CA
This gorgeous sculptural armchair by Giuseppe Scapinelli was crafted in Brazil circa 1960 and freshly reupholstered with luxurious bouclé fabric. Quintessential Brazilian Modernism with the refined elegance that Italian-born Scapinelli was known for. Ideal option for collectors or interior designers working on a high-end luxury project looking for a rare chair that checks all the boxes. The back of the chair has a similar look to the Martin Eisler and Carlo Hauner 'Costela' (aka Rib) chair with the slatted skeletal styled back. Incredible comfort, eye-catching silhouette, luxurious materials plus a sought-after rare design - get this chair before it's gone as they don't come around often. This Giuseppe Scapinelli armchair would work great in a Mid-Century Modern, Scandanavian Modern or Danish Modern home or penthouse apartment but could also look fantastic in a Contemporary or Post-Modern room. Also consider mixing it up in a Traditional, Transitional, Classical or Art Deco room with a splash of juxtaposition. Would also be an apt choice in a commercial project such as a hotel lobby lounge or members club, creative design studio or high-rise executive office. Consider using as a side chair, cafe or breakfast table chair...

Sergio Rodrigues 'Gio' Chairs in Rosewood and Edelman Shearling, 1960s Brazil
By Sergio Rodrigues
Located in Los Angeles, CA
If you are looking for the most unique and coveted rare pair of large scale armchairs for you or your client, look no further, this pair of Sergio Rodrigues 'Gio' three-position adjustable lounge chairs are the best examples of this rare and coveted design you can find, and we will explain why below. First, this pair was sourced in Rio Brazil and exported to the U.S. where we recently restored them. We took a photo of the chairs in Brazil prior to shipping, then took more photos of them with the original fabric in our showroom prior to reupholstery. The unique attribute on this pair of 'Gio' club chairs are the removable Rosewood pegs which allow the chair to adjust up or down in three different seating positions to customize the amount of recline to make these chairs the perfect and more comfortable relaxation tool you can imagine. Secondly, the Gio design is incredibly rare - much more common is the Vronka design which is similar but fixed and not adjustable. Of Sergio's designs, the 'Gio' design is one of the most sought after by collectors and art collectors - and having a pair that was sourced in Brazil with beautiful visible age, demonstrating its authenticity and beauty. Third, as you can see in the photos, we restored these in incredible fashion - with luxurious and very expensive Edelman Shearling. We kept the hides in their natural shapes and upholstered the chairs as such giving it an organic and natural pattern. It took 22 shearling hides to complete these two large scale chairs, the cost of the hides and reupholstery was over $5,000 however the results are the most unique and special 'Gio' chairs you will ever find. Last but not least, the frames were fabricated from Brazilian Jacaranda (Rosewood) with incredibly beautiful deep Rosewood grain - Brazilian Rosewood is an endangered species so furniture can no longer be produced with it making it more valuable and special, especially for collectors and investors in art and design. The signature look of the Gio lounge chairs are the finial (peg) inserts that hold the adjustable seats in position; which are also in Jacaranda Rosewood. On the seat frames are three Rosewood receptacles on each side which the pegs insert into. Incredible details, exquisite craftsmanship and design, and luxurious materials all in this pair of Sergio Rodrigues Gio chairs...

Sergio Rodrigues 'Tonico' Jacaranda, Leather and Alpaca Armchairs, 1960s Brazil
By Oca, Sergio Rodrigues
Located in Los Angeles, CA
If you are looking for the most unique and coveted rare pair of armchairs for you or your client, look no further, this pair of Sergio Rodrigues 'Tonico' lounge chairs are the best examples you can find, and we will explain why below. First, this pair was produced under supervision by Sergio in his own factory in Brazil - but - exclusively for the US market, distributed for a very short time by Brazilian Interiors in the late 1960s and early 1970s. In the gallery of this listing is a photo of the Brazilian Interiors catalogue that displays this model and confirms production was supervised by Sergio in his own factory in Brazil. The unique attribute on this pair of 'Tonico' lounge chairs is the addition of paddle arms whereas normal production of the Tonico design was without armrests. This addition adds greater comfort to these already incredibly comfortable chairs. Secondly, 'Tonico' lounge chairs, loveseats and sofas are already incredibly rare - this pair with paddle arms are even more exceptionally rare and special. Of Sergio's designs, the 'Tonico' line is the most sought after by collectors and art collectors - this pair possesses greater rarity and also have the additional value of provenance which makes them much more valuable and desirable for collectors over the typical Tonico chairs...

Joaquim Tenreiro “Curva” Chairs, Brazil, 1960s
By Joaquim Tenreiro
Located in Utrecht, NL
Joaquim Tenreiro was a sculptor, painter, engraver and designer, born into a family of joiners. By the late 1940s, the modern movement had taken hold in Brazil, and Tenreiro’s pieces with a more modern sensibility became increasingly popular. These chairs were conceived according to Tenreiro’s principle that Brazilian furniture should be light, in his words, “lightness, has nothing to do with the weight itself, but with grace and functionality”. Testimony to the ideological alignment of Brazilian modern furniture, Tenreiro's design is rooted in the principle of stripping back the unnecessary to demonstrate the true beauty of an object whilst maintaining the upmost function. “Curva”, meaning ‘curve’ in Portuguese, inspired the model’s name, and is based on the defining curve of the backrest. Tenreiro’s deep knowledge of wood is illustrated through the poetic features in his lines. In these chairs’ seats, the designer explored the weaving of cane, which evokes indigenous braiding and basketry. The use of wood and natural fibres is generally associated with the need to adapt furniture...

Pair of Brazilian Iron Armchairs, Brazil, 1950s
Located in Utrecht, NL
This imposing pair of Brazilian armchairs in iron and fabric is a visually stunning representation of Brazilian Modern design. The well thought out minimalism of these armchairs is honest, elegant and comfortable. The pair is defined by geometric lines that contrast with the softness of the seat, arm- and backrest. All of the structural elements are indispensable for its stability and are arranged with geometric rigour. Elegance and strength are cleverly combined in this Minimalist sculptural piece. The continuity of the structural lines “sketches the space aerially”. The one of a kind upholstery has been recently done in a premium black and white fabric by the world famous French atelier, Toyine Sellers...
