About the Item

Charlotte Perriand “Tokyo” Bench, wood, France, 1956 Conceived in Tokyo in 1953 and later implemented in Les Arcs 1600 in 1960, this modular bench reflects the essentialist vocabulary of post-war architecture. An original vintage piece—not a contemporary reissue—it retains its original markings and exemplifies Perriand’s vision of integrated, rational design. The slatted oak seat rests on vertical panel legs and supports a single upholstered volume in white fabric. A discreet anchoring system allows flexible placement of cushions, embracing modularity and adaptation for living rooms, conversation areas, or resting points. At Les Arcs, Perriand used these benches throughout the Trois Arcs apartments, aligning with her philosophy of minimal environmental impact and material honesty. Inspired by her time in Japan and developed in dialogue with Jean Prouvé, this model shares conceptual ties with her “Cansado” bench, emphasizing clarity, modularity, and human-centered design. Few authentic editions remain. This piece stands as a testament to Charlotte Perriand’s architectural thinking and her legacy of collective, modernist design—shaped through collaborations with Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, and Japanese craftsmen.
