Eames Molded Plywood Lounge Chair Metal Base (LCM), Circa 1950s

About the Item

The Eames LCM (Lounge Chair Metal) features sheets of premium face veneer on both sides of the seat and back. The wide variety of wood available adds to the versatility and beauty of Charles and Ray’s molded plywood design. The chair can also be padded and upholstered, giving you numerous options to customize the seating for any space. The LCM frame is much more delicate than the bent wood legs and frame of the LCW. Steel rod can do the job of wood, with less mass. The Eames LCM is still manufactured today by Vitra and Herman Miller. By 1945, when the Eames Molded Plywood Group was introduced to potential distribution partners, and 1946, when the Eames LCM and the rest of the group was introduced to the public in a rather grand way, at the Museum of Modern Art, Charles and Ray had many years of plywood experience under their belt. Charles had used plywood for the Kleinhans Auditorium, the Crow Island School chairs, and the Organic Design competition chairs. Charles and Ray co-designed the Eames leg splint, molded of plywood with the compound curves characteristic of what they then called the “Eames process,” which was patented. The molded plywood furniture was sturdy, lightweight, and the parts were susceptible to mass production, using the “Eames process,” by which the actual sheets of plywood were formed at the same time as the compound curves were imposed. Using a homemade device, Charles and Ray called the “Kazaam” machine (referencing stage magicians, who put one object in a box and pull out a distinctly different one, Ala Kazaam!), perfected molding in their own residential apartment on Strathmore Avenue in West Los Angeles. The first plywood pieces got their shape from balloons, which Charles and Ray filled with air supplied by a bicycle pump! One of the Eameses’ most inventive ideas was the application of shock mounts to furniture design. Previously employed only for industrial purposes, Charles and Ray were the first to adapt the technique to plywood chairs. They used thick rubber discs to reduce the shock between the wooden seat and back sections, providing strength, resiliency, and flexibility within the composition.

Eames Molded Fiberglass Armchair for Herman Miller "Seafoam Green"'
By Charles and Ray Eames
Located in Centreville, VA
Eames Molded Fiberglass Armchair for Herman Miller "Seafoam Green"' Arguably one of the 20th century’s most beloved designs, the Eames Shell chairs remain a sought after design classic nearly 55 years later. The molded fiberglass chairs are the result of Charles and Ray’s 6 years of experimenting with molded plywood to create a single shell form. Unable to successfully create the single shell with molded plywood at the time, Charles & Ray saw an opportunity to fulfill their vision using a new material: fiberglass. Charles Eames famously said, “The role of the designer is that of a very good, thoughtful host anticipating the needs of his guests.” The Molded Shell Chairs...

La Fonda Arm Chair by Eames for Herman Miller
By Charles and Ray Eames

This arm chair is one of two new fiberglass chairs Charles and Ray Eames designed in 1961, inspired by request from Alexander Girard, who needed seating for his new Manhattan restaurant, La Fonda Del Sol. Some collectors call these “La Fonda” chairs after the restaurant where they were first installed. Because Girard wanted chairs with seat backs no higher than dining table tops, Charles and Ray Eames designed the Eames La Fonda Arm Chair...
