Kaare Klint Mix Chair in Original Niger Leather

About

Kaare Klint and the iconic “Mix Chair” Kaare Klint – the father of Danish Furniture Design – was also a pioneer in teaching. As head of the Department of Furniture Design at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen (1923-1954), he organised the department more as an architectural office, where he has lecturer, not only gave good advice but also sat down with the students at the drawings boards. Kaare Klint considered it as a huge advantage that students of different ages and backgrounds collaborated to create designs. Kaare Klint believed that it was possible to achieve more as a team than as an individual. All observations and experimental results were recorded in writing so that the students could build on the knowledge from the past. Kaare Klint’s mix chair has earned iconic status among collectors since its unveiling in 1930. On the sketch, Kaare Klint wrote ”Mix chair” where he described the chair as "a mixture of Kindt and Klint". With this he credited his pupil at the Academy, Edvard Kindt-Larsen with his collaboration on the chair. Edvard Kindt-Larsen, who graduated from the Academy in 1927, had worked on the chair as a school project while he was a pupil at the academy. He later became a famous furniture designer himself. The ”Mix Chair” is admired as much for its elegant, flowing form as for its construction concept. The subtle play of curvatures: convex at top, concave in the seat, with a constant rolling line from one front leg to the top and down to the other leg. Pictures attached are of an early Mix Chair with Nigerian red leather. Executed by cabinetmakers Rud. Rasmussen A/S, Copenhagen, Denmark. Underside with manufacturer’s paper label RUD. RASMUSSENS/SNEDKERIER/45 NØRREBROGADE/KØBENHAVN, handwritten inventory number and architect's monogrammed paper label. Original sketch also attached.
