Set of 2 PK 22 Chairs by Poul Kjaerholm for E. Kold Christensen, Denmark, 1955

About the Item

Set of Two PK 22 Chairs by Poul Kjaerholm, Denmark, 1955. A rare early set of PK22 lounge chairs by Poul Kjærholm, produced by E. Kold Christensen before the manufacturing was taken over by Fritz Hansen. These are early examples with their original woven cane seats, still fully intact. The cane has darkened over the decades into a warm, rich tone – a natural patina that clearly sets them apart from the newer productions with pale, uniform finishes. The steel frames show light signs of age, mostly around the joints and lower legs, but remain sharp in form. The chairs still have that floating, balanced look Kjærholm is known for, where everything feels reduced to essentials without losing comfort. The cane weaving is finely done, especially visible at the edges and corners where the wrap is tight and deliberate. Nothing has been replaced or restored – what you see is the original work, very well-preserved. This version, with woven cane and E. Kold Christensen’s production stamp, is increasingly hard to find. An identical pair is part of the permanent collection at the Danish Design Museum in Copenhagen, which underlines the importance and rarity of this edition in Kjærholm’s body of work. It’s a quiet, confident set – not polished, not overworked – just well-aged materials holding a strong, minimal form. For collectors or anyone looking for a pure, early example of Kjærholm’s thinking. We have very good rates for crating and shipping for mainland USA and UK, please ask for shipping quote.

! Poul Kjærholm PK 22 Chair Reupholstered in Cowhide E. Kold Christensen 1963
By E. Kold Christensen, Poul Kjærholm
Located in Santa Gertrudis, Baleares
Poul Kjærholm (1929–1980) the praised Danish designer, the "furniture architect", designed the emblematic PK22 Chair in 1956. Standing out from the other Danish mid century designers, his predilection material wasn't wood but steel. This PK22 gets its outstanding comfort from the cowhide which is floating above the metal structure, thanks to the curved crossbars that holds the feet together without interfering with the seat's ergonomy. The obviously powerful and effective design speaks for itself, fitting perfectly a more intimate space needing structure and discretion thanks to the thin and light side view, as well as larger rooms thanks to the wide seat and backrest creating subtle geometric shapes. The chair has been reupholstered in an elegant black and white cowhide, whose unique pattern interacts gracefully with the design. The frame bears...
