Pair of Charlotte Perriand Dordogne Chairs for Robert Sentou, France c1950

About the Item

Set of four or six available. Charlotte Perriand (1903-1999), a key figure of European modernism, famously started her career with a rebuff from Le Corbusier’s studio: “We don’t embroider cushions here.” Not deterred she packed out her portfolio and her design for a bar made it into the Salon d’Automne in Paris, 1925. Crafted from nickel, aluminium sheet, tubular metal and blue leather, it turned heads, including the heads of Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret, who, chastened, offered her a job. Her career flourished and her aesthetic shifted from metal to using wood and cane, inspired by travels to Japan in the 1940s. She left Japan wanting to strengthen the relationship between humanity and nature within the home. She created the Dordorgne chairs from solid wood and straw, honest craftsmanship with modernist precision. The set vary in patina. All the chairs are structurally sound and come with minor surface wear and very minor losses. Please note the ones photographed have sold, please contact for images of our current set.
