About the Item

An outstanding and increasingly rare set of four Model 42 armchairs designed by Kai Kristiansen and produced in Denmark during the 1960s. Often referred to as the “Z-chair” for its distinctive angular profile, this model is a masterclass in Scandinavian design—functional, elegant, and sculptural. This set is crafted from solid rosewood, a particularly scarce and sought-after variant of the Model 42. The rich, expressive grain and deep, luxurious color of the rosewood lend a sense of warmth and refinement that elevates the already iconic silhouette. The chairs feature Kristiansen’s signature floating backrest and expertly engineered joinery, designed to offer exceptional comfort and visual lightness. All four chairs have been expertly restored, with the frames carefully refinished and the seats newly upholstered in a high-quality fabric. Whether used as dining chairs or statement accent seating, these pieces embody the timeless appeal of mid-century Danish modernism. The distinctive form is what makes these chairs so desirable amongst collectors. Each chair stands as a work of art, captivating the eye from every angle. The chairs are as comfortable as they are beautiful. The back rests pivot to follow the gentle movements of the body as it interacts with the chair. The previous owners updated the chairs with a cream colored velour type upholstery. 19.75" Wide x 22" Deep x 29" High (17.25" seat height) Condition: Arms have been refinished. Upholstery has been steam cleaned but has a few minor blemishes (see photos).
