Carl Hansen CH78 Mama Bear Chair in Oak/ Fiord 0271 Fabric by Hans J. Wegner

$3,230per item

About

Affectionately known as the Mama Bear Chair, the CH78 lounge chair was originally introduced in 1954, and was an extension of Wegner’s CH71 ‘Mini Bear’ Chair (1952) design. Defined by a series of inviting curves that offer up a warm embrace, the CH78 lounge chair’s special aesthetic character comes from the way it balances soft, rounded curves with dynamic geometries and fine details, such as the signature wooden ‘claws’ on the chair’s armrests. This lightweight, modern lounge chair is both soft and highly supportive, offering ergonomic comfort to the neck, back, and body which encourages rest and relaxation. “The CH78 lounge chair’s characteristic expression and lightness fits perfectly into a modern context and, not least, the Carl Hansen & Søn collection. It’s furthermore a natural next step after having introduced Hans J. Wegner’s CH71 lounge chair and CH72 sofa from 1952 back in 2018. Like both of those pieces, CH78 is the embodiment of comfort in a limited space,” says Knud Erik Hansen, CEO of Carl Hansen & Søn. Hans J. Wegner was part of the spectacular generation that created the first wave of Danish modern design. ‘Many foreigners have asked me how we created the Danish style,’ Wegner once said. ‘And I’ve answered that it was a continuous process of purification and of simplification - to cut down to the simplest possible design of four legs, a seat, and a combined back- and armrest.’ The core of Wegner’s legacy is his focus on showing the inner soul of furniture pieces through a simple and functional exterior. The son of a cobbler, Wegner was born in 1914 in Tønder, a town in southern Denmark. He began his apprenticeship with Danish master cabinetmaker H. F. Stahlberg when he was just 14 years old. Later on, he moved to Copenhagen and attended the School of Arts and Crafts from 1936 to 1938 before setting out as a furniture designer. About Hans J. Wegner (Designer)

Best known for his chairs and seating pieces — though a master of many furniture types like sofas and tables — Hans Wegner was a prolific designer whose elegant, often ebullient, forms and devotion to the finest methods in joinery made "Danish Modern" a popular byword for stylish, well-made furniture in the mid-20th century.

Wegner considered himself a carpenter first and a furniture designer second. Like his peers Arne Jacobsen and Finn Juhl, Wegner believed that striking aesthetics in furniture were based on a foundation of practicality: a chair must be comfortable and sturdy before it is chic.

In keeping with that tenet, several of Wegner’s best chair designs, seen in dealer listings below, have their roots in traditional seating forms. The “Peacock chair” (designed 1947) is a throne-like adaptation of the Windsor chair; pieces from the “China chair” series (begun in 1944) as well as the 1949 “Wishbone chair,” with its distinctive Y-shaped back splat, are derived from 17th-century Ming seating pieces, as is the upholstered “Ox chair” (1960). Wegner’s comfy “Papa Bear chair” (1951) is an almost surreally re-scaled English wingback chair.

Wegner’s most representative piece, the “Round chair” (1949), gained a footnote in political history when it was used on the TV stage of the first Kennedy-Nixon debate of 1960. That chair, along with Wegner’s more bravura designs, for example the 1963 “Shell chair,” with its curved surfboard-shaped seat, bring a quietly sculptural presence to a room.  Wegner was a designer who revered his primary material — wood — and it shows. His wood gathers patina and character with age; every Hans Wegner piece testifies to the life it has led.

Carl Hansen & Søn’s evolution has been deeply influenced by our long-term relationship with one of the greatest designers of all time: Hans J. Wegner. The creative partnership began in 1949, when Wegner developed a successful furniture series exclusively for Carl Hansen & Søn, which included the now-iconic CH24 Wishbone Chair. We also produce important works by the renowned mid-century Danish masters such as Wegner, Børge Mogensen, Ole Wanscher, Frits Henningsen, Arne Jacobsen, Kaare Klint, and Poul Kjæarholm, and contemporary designers such as Tadao Ando, EOOS and Brad Ascalon.
