Gerrit Rietveld Unesco Press Room Chair for Spectrum, 'Colourful Vintage'

About the Item

Gerrit Rietveld designed in 1958 Unesco press room chair for Spectrum - 'Colourful Vintage' Edition 'Colourful Vintage', which means: fabric: Sprinkles 0784 (Febrik), armrests in American walnut, black swivel base. Gerrit Thomas Rietveld (1888-1964) is one of the Netherlands’ most renowned and innovative architects, furniture makers and designers. Rietveld trained in his father’s furniture workshop and was from a young age inspired by the ideas of the Dutch artistic movement ‘De Stijl’. Early on in his career, Rietveld turned his back on the heavy style of 19th-century furniture and started experimenting with pioneering designs. He tried to define space while maintaining a certain openness in all directions. This resulted in constructions of lines and planes, which were later coloured red, yellow, and blue under the influence of De Stijl. Rietveld initially worked as a furniture designer, but after the success of the Rietveld Schröder House – perhaps his most famous design – he also became famous as an architect. But even after Rietveld had handed his furniture workshop over to his assistant Gerard van de Groenekan, he continued to design furniture. One of his earliest designs, the famous Red and Blue Chair, is an icon of Dutch design. In 1957 Rietveld was commissioned by the Dutch government to design the interior of the Press Room at the new UNESCO headquarters in Paris. In this project he worked alongside some of the leading architects of that time such as Bernard Zehrfuss, Marcel Breuer, Charles Le Corbusier, Pier Luigi Nervi and Walter Gropius. The Press Room was situated in the basement of the building. The room had several sloping walls and many columns, which complicated the design. When Rietveld later elaborated on the Press Room design he said: “To create an attractive working environment it was not just a matter of designing and installing furniture, but even more of juggling colours and lines.” He even considered involving interior painters, but finally found the solution of using a linoleum floor with a pattern that was fully integrated with the furniture design. For the furniture, Rietveld designed several bookcases, chairs, and tables, including one with an illuminated map of the world. After a renovation of the Paris building in the 1980s, Rietveld’s entire design was moved to the storage space of the Dutch Ministry of Education & Culture’s Cultural Heritage Department. The Press Room Chair is the lowest in a series of three chairs that Rietveld designed in 1958 for the Press Room of the UNESCO building. This lounge chair was intended for use as an armchair at the journalists’ reading table. However, due to budget and time limitations, the chairs were ultimately replaced by the armchairs Rietveld had designed for the World Exhibition in Brussels earlier that year. Thankfully though, the original design drawings and scale models have been preserved, so that the chair could be built exactly as Rietveld had envisioned it. The only alteration to the 1958 design is that the height of the swivel base has been increased by 6 cm, to meet contemporary standards of ergonomics and comfort. The design of the Press Room Chair has a clearly recognizable Rietveld signature. Many of Rietveld’s designs combine a sloping seat and back with armrests that appear to be slightly higher than usual. In his notes, he simply described the chair as: “Comfortable chair on a swivel base for UNESCO”. Please note: The Press Room Chair by Gerrit Rietveld for Spectrum is fully customizable. There are numerous possibilities in upholstery, finish of the frame and the execution of the armrests.
