Modern Lounge Chairs

MODERN STYLE

The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw sweeping social change and major scientific advances — both of which contributed to a new aesthetic: modernism. Rejecting the rigidity of Victorian artistic conventions, modernists sought a new means of expression. References to the natural world and ornate classical embellishments gave way to the sleek simplicity of the Machine Age. Architect Philip Johnson characterized the hallmarks of modernism as “machine-like simplicity, smoothness or surface [and] avoidance of ornament.”

Early practitioners of modernist design include the De Stijl (“The Style”) group, founded in the Netherlands in 1917, and the Bauhaus School, founded two years later in Germany.

Followers of both groups produced sleek, spare designs — many of which became icons of daily life in the 20th century. The modernists rejected both natural and historical references and relied primarily on industrial materials such as metal, glass, plywood, and, later, plastics. While Bauhaus principals Marcel Breuer and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe created furniture from mass-produced, chrome-plated steel, American visionaries like Charles and Ray Eames worked in materials as novel as molded plywood and fiberglass. Today, Breuer’s Wassily chair, Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona chaircrafted with his romantic partner, designer Lilly Reich — and the Eames lounge chair are emblems of progressive design and vintage originals are prized cornerstones of collections.

It’s difficult to overstate the influence that modernism continues to wield over designers and architects — and equally difficult to overstate how revolutionary it was when it first appeared a century ago. But because modernist furniture designs are so simple, they can blend in seamlessly with just about any type of décor. Don’t overlook them.

Mario Bellini for Cassina Cab 415 Buffalo Cognac Leather Club Chairs Italy 1980s
Located in Almelo, NL
A beautiful set of four (4) rare out-of-production Mario Bellini Model 415 'Cab' Club Chairs in incredible thick Patinated Buffalo Cognac leather, by Cassina (signed), designed in the 1970s, these early production examples produced in circa 1980s. These fine examples of the cab line by Mario Bellini for Cassina are classic staples for luxury interior designers and collectors alike, these large and hefty club chair variations of the design are much larger and deeper than the similar model #414 lounge chair chair and much much larger than the model #413 dining armchair variation of the design. These club chairs are produced in thick Buffalo leather instead of standard Bovine leather. Signed underneath with a Cassina / Made in Italy label, Cassina embossing to the leather and Cassina repeat fabric under the seat and is priced as a set of four. Ideal rare set for an art / design collector, investor or luxury interior designer client... this is a collectible out-of-production signed set with original Buffalo cognac leather. The heavy patinated leather hides have beautiful patina which lends a casual soft appeal that you don't get in new production items. Mario Bellini described the 1970s bestselling design for the Cab collection as “This was a new kind of chair, constructed totally out of leather, much cloned since then.” and is now a signature piece in Cassina’s Contemporanei collection. Cab was the first-ever chair to feature a free-standing leather structure, inspired by how our skin fits over our skeleton. The upholstery consists of sixteen pieces of saddle leather. They then undergo fourteen discrete procedures, again by hand. The pieces are sewn together only when their outer edges have been trimmed to ensure a perfect fit. Once assembled, the cover is attached to the chair’s steel skeleton and held in place by means of a zipper fastening as in a bespoke tailored garment. These buffalo cognac leather Mario Bellini for Cassina Cab 415...
