About the Item

Sofa BO64 designed by Finn Juhl for Bovirke, Denmark, 1940s. Savak wool upholstery and stained wooden legs. Provenance: Acquired by current owner at Bovirke in Copenhagen in 1953. Finn Juhl designed his rare three-seater sofa model BO46 in the 1940s. With its curving, compact body, the design was likely influenced by the biomorphic sculptures of contemporary artists, such as Hans Arp and the Icelandic sculptor Sigurjón Ólafsson he so admired. This piece was newly upholstered with contrasting colours, in white and grey Savak wool. The Danish furniture manufacturer Bovirke realised the BO64 sofa – the company is particularly known for its furniture designed by Finn Juhl and Arne Vodder during the 1950s and 1960s. Finn Juhl was the most sculptural of the Danish masters. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest furniture designers of the 20th century and was a pioneering figure within Danish furniture design and the Danish modern movement.
